Heat Shield Micra 2000 - Drivethru
Is the heat shield on the Micra exhaust necessary? Mine has dropped off and the local garage said they are not necessary and I needn't bother replacing it. Is this correct? Thanks.

Since nobody else has answered this question, I'll have a go.

By 'heat shield' do you mean the thing over the cat? The cat can get very hot an present a danger to anyone working under the car. It can also start a fire if you park over dry leaves, long grass (etc).

The bolt-counters at Nissan wouldn't have gone to the trouble and expense of fitting a heat shield if it wasn't necessary.

This seems to be fairly common with Micras. The mountings on the cat corrode and eventually disintegrate, so you can't just bolt on a new shield. I removed mine when it started to rattle. There's a fair bit of ground clearance, assuming you haven't lowered it, so I doubt it's much of a fire risk. Parking over long grass isn't recommended even with a heat shield, so as long as you're sensible it should be fine. I don't think it's an MOT requirement - mine has passed the last two without it.

Rip it off. When they get to 6 - 7 years they corrode and rattle. Mine was off for years with no problems.
