Is it bad for a diesel to crank it over while the plugs are doing their thing?

It chugged a bit this morning (Quite a chilly night) but did fire up. It wasn't as quick as usual (About 2 turns of the motor!).

Is a grumpy sounding engine the worst thing that can happen?

I don't think it does much harm to the engine, but puts a hell of a strain on your battery.

If it causes the engine to run rough then it's not advisable.
Use the glowplugs - they are there for a reason.

it will do no harm except as has been said put extra strain on your battery

I think the effects on battery and starter motor while real and true, aren't the serious issue.

The big difference is in the amount of unburnt fuel washing the oil off the bores. If pre-heat works properly, the engine starts more easily **and** continues to run smoothly, burning the fuel that is injected properly. If you make a habit of starting without allowing full pre-heat, then you should also be saving up for a re-bore and new pistons!

Cheers all.

Completely forgot to pay attention to the light this morning; reverted to HDi 'Wot glow plug light?' behaviour.

Shouldn't really put any extra strain on the battery, as glow plugs stay on for several secs after the lamp goes out. In fact, they can be energised for a few minutes on some cars after a cold start, for emmissions purposes.

Yes, nearly all cars glow while cranking anyway.
According to Beru's website, most have preheat, cranking heat and post start heat, how much of each depends on application and temperature.

15 years ago or so a colleague had a Cav 1.7 TD, used to complain about how hard it was to start, she (no, I am not being sexist as it happends it was a she) had had it a year or so before some mentioned the glowplug light, "glowplug?", "light?", "wait 10 seconds? "I have just been putting the key in and starting it". Problem solved.

About the same time another colleague complained about how slow their Cav TD was, after a few weeks listening to their moaning and getting frustrated by their dismissal of my advise to take it to the dealer I took it for a drive and after moving the footwell mat from under the accelerator found that it went as well as the rest of them!

Surely NC diesel is a fairly good lubricator, it is much more of a problem flooding a petrol engine for this reason.

The worst aspect is probably air polution, my 405 smokes quite a bit for about 5 seconds if I don't wait for the plugs.

I'm surprised that anyones engine needs much glowplug time at the moment, it is still August !
You must live very far North !

Nope, in the south east!

It was an unusually cold morning, even I noticed it. It seemed like the car had 'gotten used' to starting with a slightly warmer ambient temperature. Maybe the ECU's adapt more than we realise! :^D

About the only thing I liked about our old Polo diesel was that it started its preheat cycle when you unlocked the doors.

I read somewhere a long time ago that the partially burned fuel and sooty deposits caused by improper cold starting of a diesel can eventually foul the injectors, but I don't know how true that is.

Cheers
