I assume you have done all the usual checks? Fuel filter, fuel level, glowplugs etc? Did this start suddenly, or have you had worsening starting over several days.
If you have done the straightforward stuff I 'd look at the cut off solenoid on the high pressure pump. Basically a rubber cone on the end of a steel rod in a solenoid. When you apply current to the solenoid, when the "ignition" is turned on, the rod and cone is held clear of the inlet to the pump. If you turn power off, the rod & cone drop onto the inlet of the pump, cutting off the fuel. Easiest way to check is to remove rod and cone, and replace solenoid. If it is that, then the thing will keep running, and you will have to look for the off lever on the pump, or stall it. Beware bits of the cone falling off

thanks-just done that and makes no difference.Over the last few days the car has felt like it was struggling,I do a 70 mile round tript each day and towards end of journey-engine did not feel right. If it was fuel pump, why is it starting?? Any advice appreciated-many thanks Like I say she starts first time-just runs for 4 seconds only.

Air leak in the fuel system??
When the car's left standing overnight, air could be entering the system, leaving a little bit of fuel in the engine, some in the line from the tank, and nothing in between - happened to my neighbour's 306 with similar symptoms. Try priming the fuel system before starting the car, with that little black sqeezy thing (if fitted on the AX?!) - if it lasts longer than 4 seconds that's your problem!

thanks for advice, however can I explain that car starts instantly-no problemo!!!
It just then stops running after 4 seconds.then starts again-4 secs, then stops. It will even rev for 4 seconds-flat out.Something is making it cut out,its not the stop solenoid, because I have dismantled that.there is no alarm/immobiliser fitted,I cant think of anything else electrical.I dont see how it can be the pump,as how would the fuel get into the injectors each time it stops, surely it would start once and then not again until I've primed it,but no start, run, stop and then start straight away???????????????????????? Help anyone pls many thanks

OK, not so much a cone as small rubber "top hat" to the end of the "rod". Any way, unless there are bits of rubber loose in the bottom, you seem to have got rid of that possibility. Should be able to see with a good torch, but beware, you don't want dirt or rust falling in.
GregSwain is suggesting bubbles of air in the input to the pump (caused usually by air leaks in the system) which you can reduce by squeezing the primer bulb in the fuel line. Could be air leaks in the leak off pipes going from the injectors & returning to the tank, but don't see how that could cause it to run for 4 seconds only.
One of the Pug/Citroen diesel lads will be along in a second with the solution probably.
Funny thing, as you say, if there ain't no immobiliser (would be other electrical connections to pump) then your only problem could be fuel. Water in fuel would tend to stop it, not just let it run for 4 seconds. (Have you tried running a sample into a clear jar by operating opening the filter bleed and using the primer?
It's that 4 seconds thing!

fuel running thru fine and clear as far as i can see, there is of course some air in system as i keep having to take injector pipes off to get to stop switch.I took it off for second time and there was nothing I could except a rod with a spring in it,you worry me a little with this top hat thing,I had a good look inside (I think) though fuel kept filling up hole,I poked a small screwdriver around-it all seemed metallics-no rubber etc, sounds like yr getting as flumxed as me??? best regards

Hi,
Got a similar problem except mine stalls after 4 minutes and wont start. After waiting a few more minutes it starts and the whole process starts over again.
Have you got any further with your problem? Might give me a clue!
