Britains best value performance car ? - Murphy The Cat
At long last the details are coming out for what I believe may be Britains best value high performance saloon car. If it is as well rec'd here as elsewhere in the world it should be a real winner. Saying that, I wouln't want to pay for its petrol !

I'm sure that there will be more indepth reports later, but here's one for starters.

A lot of car for the money though re my thread of earlier today you can get a full loaded 282bhp 335d Touring or a 302bhp 335i twin turbo and have change out of £39k, more my cup of tea. Also IIRC an RS4 is in that ball park.

Having done a good few miles in a 4.7 V8 Grand Cherokee in the US last year I would like to drive the Jeep with that 6.1 engine.

Jeep SRT8 - Murphy The Cat
Hi cheddar

although it is from an American site, this could be the roadtest for the Jeep SRT8 that you are talking about.

tinyurl.com/c69c6

I lifted this quote from the article

Actually, that IS right. The 400-hp Range Rover SC is an astonishingly fast and agile vehicle for its size and weight but with active roll-bars, air suspension and a $70,000 price tag that's not so surprising. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, however, stomps even the blown Range Rover in terms of performance and it's little more than half the price of the Range Rover. You'd better be sitting down for this. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is about to rock your SUV world.

i really fancy one of those petrol bi-turbo ones, fuel economy looks good as well.
Britains best value performance car ? - Micky
Fuel economy looks good? Yes, I'm sure the fuel economy is good. But where is the driving experience? Who in their right mind would set the alarm to arise at 0430 hrs to enjoy a swift 100 miles before breakfast in a petrol bi-turbo thingy created by the sausage eaters? I have a mundanodronemobile, I get into it, I turn the key and off it goes. That's it. It keeps me cool when it's hot and warm when it's cold, the music thing is good but there's nothing to listen to on the radio with the honorable exception of Radio 4, although that's 50% dire rubbish. Is this a measure of how good modern cars are? I can rely on it, I don't have to heat the plugs on a cold morning. What is a starting handle? Where is the battery? How can it not start, it has petrol and I've got the key, therefore it will start. Points? What's the point?

But, but ........... I really want an elderly Dolomite Sprint. In yellow. I quite fancy a 1970s Fiat convertible, are there any left? Or an Alfa Sud perhaps? I already have two elderly Brit convertibles, I cannot possibily justify a third. An elderly LR, soft top with V8 perhaps? In case it snows? And if the oil is runnign out i want to burn my fair share of it, can't let the Yanks have all the fun. An Alfa Sud convertible? Did such a thing exist? Can a Sprint be used on daily basis? Perhaps I should buy another one as a spare?
Britains best value performance car ? - Murphy The Cat

Assuming you mean performance car rather than sports car, then surely it has to be the Focus ST. 225 bhp, a lovely burbling 5 pot, 0-60 in the low 6's, 140-something top speed, brilliant handling, solid build quality, Ford parts and service prices, and £16k ish for the entry level model with a bit of haggling.

OK, so it doesn't look anything special, but just look what it does for the money.

Murphy goes to the bottom of the class for writing a duff thread title.

OK cards on the table time. I drive a 300C CRD (this won't be a surpise to some !) and I am a very happy 300C owner - won't go into details, but the car does everything and more than ever I could have hoped for.

When Chrysler announce that the 300C was coming to the UK, they initially were quite hedgy about whether the SRT-8 would follow. & now they have announced that it will.

When I startred this thread, I was thinking about "fast" Mercs, Audis, BMW's, Jaguars etc and TBH I never even thought about cars like 3 Series BMW's, road rally cars and hot Focus editions. I just saw huge car, massive power, scary performance and enough long legged ability to take 5 people in complete comfort across Europe. And all for less than £40000.

So once again, sorry about the duff title, but I hope that you can now see where I was coming from.

MTC

p.s. my name is down for a test drive / full day evaluation (invited by Chrysler, no less !!). & I'm saving up my pennies now so that I can REALY enjoy a good day out.

There are NONE in Kendal and NONE at Newby Bridge -- you're not thinking of sites where the "double glazing van" parks up are you ?

The only person I know with an Evo is not a chav. He's in his early 40's, happily married, and an airline pilot. He bought it because it is just about the fastest and most rewarding B-road car money can buy. Most Evos I see are driven by older people.

I know what you mean about the Impreza though. Loads of the early ones around now with industrial bean can exhausts belching the blue smoke of bore wear, and full of emaciated looking "geezers" with baseball caps who have the stereo turned up to drown out the big end rattle.

Either that or it will contain one of those peculiar shaven-headed, borderline sunstroke red, vest and medallion wearing gorilla types who evoke images of corrugated iron fencing, pit bull terriers and blonde airhead girlfriends with plastic breasts called Tracey.

Yep, that's me.

I own an Impreza, but not a check baseball cap.

I have to admit, however, that as used values continue to decline, Imprezas are increasingly falling into the 'wrong' hands.

Unfortunately, 'max powered' Scoobies are becoming an increasingly common sight on Britain's council estates. (so I am informed by people who visit such places).

Impreza used values, once very strong , have collapsed in recent years and a fantastic, low mileage performance car can easily be obtained for under £10k.

They don't all come with gold alloys, either.

No, I am looking at my 2006 AA map with all the fixed camera sites marked, allegedly! The Kendal area ones are

1. To the south where the road from the A591 comes into Kendal
2. On the A6 to the North at Watchgate
3. On the A591 between Stavely and Windermere

Newby Bridge

2 cameras close together on the A 590, between Newby Bridge and Haverthwaite

Whitehaven

1. 2 cameras on the A 595 where it is, effectively the Whitehaven by-pass
2. 2 Cameras on the A 595 just North of Egremont

I have an Origin detector but am not Lake bound in the forseeable future. I find that it sometimes bleeps to warn me of cameras that have been withdrawn but in the present climate I would think that cameras are on the increase! My info only comes from the AA road map, not from personal experience!

I was being a touch tongue-in-cheek! : )

I am sure we all know airline pilots aged 45 who drive Evos and the like, and yes it IS snobby to judge.... but my gut instinct on seeing one is more-or-less what I wrote. WHY would you want a rear spoiler the size of Belgium on your car unless you're i) 12 years old ii) wanting to tell the world how fast your car is iii) pertaining to i and ii insecure with size issues?

I don't particularly like the newer breed of Ferraris or many of Lambos past and present either for much the same reason. "I'm a city broker with a huge bonus (but a small packet) and my wife'll probably leave me soon because I never see her or the kids, but hey who cares, I am rich and I've got a car I can't drive at more than 20mph inside of the M25... I think girls are interested in the car and hence me, but actually the sensible ones think I'm a smug overbearing prat".

1) is where the double glazing van paks about once a month, not a camera site
2) as above
3) Correct, and the cameras are mounted on both sides of the road

MTC - thanks for your input. No mention of anything at Witherslack. However, despite being called 2006 the AA Map was published in July 2005 so it is over a year old - it was only correct when it went to press and that was probably in April 2005. The camera data is courtesy of Road Pilot and it purports to show fixed sites only. I'll rely on my Origin and you be vigilant! If you want the AA map it can be bought, of course; I didn't really want/need one but it was £1.99 when I spent £10 on fuel so I bought it!

Hey no PU, the promotion is 'Cute it isn't', meaning it's chunky and looks tough in a strangely winsome sort of way... HJ doesn't seem enamoured of the drive, but may be hoping that foolish London ladies will buy them as cheaper alternatives to Range Rovers and the like...

I was offered a drive, I accepted. Blancmange is a word that springs to mind. Obese is another. How can anyone with a vague interest in lithe handling and dynamic poise have any interest in such an abomination? Probably OK for trundling through the bad streets of Detroit or wallowing along the wide open spaces of the interstate, but anyone with any intention of making good progress through a tightening set of S bends on a damp spring morning should steer clear.

So I don't think I'll be buying one. It's a wallowing trundler.

Cracking motor, even if Murphy goes on about his a bit...

quite frankly I'm shocked that someone would say such a thing about poor old Murphy !!

I've not driven a V6 myself, but others that have place the CRD nicely above the V6 and a bit below the V8. I don't think that it bwould be fair to compare it with the SRT8.

MTC
Britains best value performance car ? - Murphy The Cat
I take it that you weren't impressed then ??

What did you expect of a 2 ton car ??? Kart like handling? It was never going to happen - but wallowing trundler is letting the prose go to far. I'm in regular contact with about 35 300C CRD owners, and every single one, without exception is delighted with the ownership expereince and driving qualities of the car. I can accept that 1 or 2 or 3 people could be wrong, but every single one of them ?

Perhaps t'other owners drive them in a fashion that suits them and the car better, and leaves making good progress through an ever tightening set of S bends to others.

But at least you tried it. I take it that the car you tried wasn't the SRT8 that I referred to in the title ?
