Somebody needs to do a bit of photoshopping then, the hole in the picture looks to be at most 1m wide ! Unless the cones in the background are a special giant variety ;-0

Did the hole open up and swallow the car and then close again to chew on it?

It doesn't look big enough to swallow a push bike - let alone a car!

OFFICIAL. The so-called North-South divide has moved.

I would guess that is is due to subsidence as a result of the drying subsoil.

This happened in Norwich some years ago when a bus sunk into a large hole, there was national press coverage as the pictures were quite spectacular.

The ad agencies were quick on the draw. The best ad was for a well know chocolate bar which showed picture of the beleaguered bus with the strap line "Nothing fills a hole like a Double-Decker"

Yes that must be it. The South is shrivelling up like a prune. Maybe the folks down there would like to buy this special moisturiser. Specially formulated in our laboratories to rehydrate trees and lawns and replenish aquifers. Available at the special price of £10 for this 25cc bottle.

Water: because you're thirsty.

Normal terms and conditions apply. Only one bottle per customer.

>>after his car fell into a large hole

"fell into" ?? By the look of that whole its alogn the lines of a square metre . That would make it a pretty small car to fall into that.

National Coal Board! It may be that subsidence from a mine caused the hole!

Are you sure this is a whole hole, not half a hole?

On the whole, I prefer the bus one, tho I note.

He hadn't seen the hole as he attempted to pull away from Paragon Place ....... Despite it being a double-decker, glazed front and rear and along both sides on each deck, none of his passengers had seen the hole either. Yet it was a big hole - 26 feet deep, and it made a determined effort to swallow the big red bus.

He didnt see a hole in the road 26 feet deep and large enought to swallow a Bus?

TVM if you look at the picture the back of the bus has fallen into the hole, presumably the subsidence happenend while the bus was stopped

Insurance claim form.

How did the accident happen?

I was driving along the road and went into a hole. It was not there the last time I drove this road, so I asume it must be new. So as you can see it was no accident.

I have heard of speed bumps and dropped kerbs, but this must be a religious road.

Get it? Holy!

Once in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam in the middle of the night, I inadvertently dropped one of the front wheels of the borrowed and nearly brakeless Fiat 125 I was driving into a big hole (the manhole cover had been taken away, as they sometimes are in Africa, to be used for something else). The car was unharmed, but one of the rear wheels had left the ground, so no traction. Two laughing passers-by lifted the front corner of the car and enabled me to reverse away gently.

Just back from eight days in Dar and I was rather impressed by the state of the roads -- apart from the nasty corrugated tarmac formed into speed humps. However, I left and returned through Lagos which must lead the world in potholes. Mostly the drivers just drive down in and out again but during rains a few weeks ago someone had clearly forgotten where the deepest were on the Badagry Road and the car was sitting in the hole with water lapping around the bottom of the windows. And a week or two before that two colleagues swear there was a body floating in one of the potholes on the same road!

No change then Harmattan? It was ever thus.

You make me feel quite nostalgic although of course that never lasts long on the actual terrain...

When the details about the hole in the road were reported to the police, they said they would look into it...

We had a similar happening in the resort where I live some years ago, when a young male driver was driving his car home in the early hours of the morning.

Apparently his vehicle came to a somewhat sudden stop and discovered it was caused by a largish, but not all that deep hole near the centre of the road; subsequent investigations revealed, IIRC, it was a legacy of work done by one of the utility companies.

A hole like this appeared in Park Road in Kingston, Surrey many years (20-25?) ago. I think it was nearly a year before they opened the road to traffic again.

It didn't bother us local children as it meant we could literally play in the road. I don't remember being told what had caused it. Wouldn't have been mines though.
