which brand of petrol (unleaded 95RON) has the highest concentration of detergents?
I do a lot of short journeys from cold starts and think that it would be a good idea to fill up with a high detergent petrol.
Thanks for your comments.

Shell Optimax is the best petrol giving better performance and economy for most (though not all) cars. Shell and Texaco petrol traditionally had the best detergent packages, but BP Ultimate petrol now has a good one too, and Esso has also introduced a high detergent petrol.
Extracted from HJ FAQ's.
Also as also mentioned on this site - intermediate oil changes will be wothwhile for your type of driving.

Most of the 'proper' brands will have similar detergents, i.e., Texaco (used to be known as clean system 3, but not any more?), Esso, Shell, BP etc.
Asda pumps actually say 'with detergent additive' on them. There's probably a few threads on this if you do a forum search (left hand side).

In addition to the above I was also e-mailed by Sainsburys customer care confirming that they use detergents, but as someone pointed out, probably not as good a detergent as in the 'proper' brands.

anyone used that 102 stuff (saw some in a BP)......... does it work, 'cos it was hideously expensive?.... what sort of motor is this aimed at?.... am i going to suddenly get neck-snapping acceleration?
|

How much was the 102 then? You'll only really notice a difference if the car has been 'remapped' to exploit the superior RON of the 102. An difference might be felt in bog-standard carburettor-fed car though!

" but as someone pointed out, probably not as good a detergent as in the 'proper' brands."
On what basis did they make that claim?

Detergents or not, they are not going to help an engine that only does short runs.Changing the oil on a more regular basis would be better than worrying about fuel type to use,IMO that is!

you had to pre-pay it in the shop and sign that you were happy to pay.... and the cost was....wait for it... £2.42 per litre. ......... i did wonder whether Beadle was going to leap out... there was a bit of preamble about how people that race use it etc, etc.......... it would need to be seriously effective for most to pay that much i suspect, so why have they done it?
|
|
Ouch, that is expensive! A few more RON costs over twice the price- not as if 97, 98 (Optimax), or even 99 RON (Tesco) costs THAT much more thean 95!

"it would need to be seriously effective for most to pay that much i suspect, so why have they done it?"
- If they make typically 5p per litre margin shared between retailer and distributor, this stuff has £1.46 more profit per litre, or 30x so they don't need to sell much, and let's face it, it 90% the same as the ordinary stuff.

MUST RESIST. MUST RESIST.

None of them publish data about additives and detergents for comparison.

I agree with Ashok although they do publish claims about extra mileage etc.
BP suggest up to another 28 miles per tankful of Ultimate and cleaner engines and so on.

May be worth while if you do a lot of miles, though this depends on weather conditions/traffic congestion.
Cannot see it would do a short drive motor that does hardly any miles any good.probably be better off as I stated before.I notice no one has really answered the OP question so its really a waste of time debating as to whether it is of any use for low mileage cars.In fact I dont recall anyone mentioning this

The only advice I can offer is that, for two years, I ran the Punto five miles a day to the station and five miles home in the evening.
In that time, it ran on Esso, Texaco and petrol from a local franchise - each used exclusively for several months at a time depending on which filling station was cheapest and close to home. Filling to the neck, running to near-empty and refilling, I never noticed any repeatable difference in fuel economy between the three brands.
Texaco gave an average of 2mpg more than the others on the long distance trips I did every second or third weekend, though. I also tried Shell V-Power which gave no improvement in mpg but did seem to make the car feel more lively to drive (no idea why!)
