Air con recharged but still not working - Sam1974
Car: Daewoo Leganza S reg

The air con on our car stopped working about two years ago and we have never bothered to get it fixed, but its so hot now, we decided to have a look round about fixing it.

We have brought a R134a canister and tested the pressure, which was low. We have topped the pressure back up to where the guage says it the correct level.

When you switch the air con on, the symbol shows on the display and we can hear a click noise coming from the front left of the car, the compressor ? so it sounds like this is working .. but still no air con

Any ideas ??

Yes, get it seen by a decent specialist.

You dont know if you have a leak, if the dryer needs replacing (almost certainly), how much oil should be in the gas or even how much gas should be in.

You could have dry seals, corrosion or holes. You are probably not certified to work with the gasses.

if rest of car works i really suggest you leave it and disconnect the belt driving the compressor if that is all it does and save an extra bit of fuel per mile...
realy not worth the spend if its been left 2 years....ballpark figure? to fix? £1000+

Possibly a bit of scaremongering there, but I'd definitely get a specialist to look at it, vacuum test it and recharge it properly for you....

I suspect if it hasn't run in 2 years, the seals have all dried out by now through lack of lubrication where the system hasn't been run to allow the lubricating oil in the system to circulate.

As others have already said, seek an AC expert.

Oh, and as for the DIY cans....

ps, remember to tell the AC expert you've already dabbled with a DIY can, so as not to knacker his expensive AC equipment - see the 3rd paragraph of the above link.

Phone the manufacturer of the can of gas and ask them what went wrong. Then take it back to the shop you got it from and ask for your money back, as it clearly hasn't worked.

Sorry to say it but you have probably wasted your money !
The clicking does sound like the compressor though, could be the charge from this can isn't sufficient. Even if it was short of refrigerant you may have such a large leak that you have lost a fair amount to atmosphere already. Even a big leak is dificult to find without the proper tools.
Also most cars do have a similar weight of refrigerant but it is quite critical on certain vehicles and i can't see how you could accurately charge a system from a tin, without digital scales. I repair vehicle a/c systems and have around £1000 worth of tools & diagnostic equipment to do the job. If you really want it working again it would be best to find a local independent specialist who's charges are fair. A main dealer should be able to sort it but they can be pricey. It's worth having it working though when it's hot !! Best of luck.

You would probably need at least 2 cans of refrigerant to refill, if the system was empty, so you have either buy another can and possibly waste another £30 (or whatever it costs) or let the experts see to it. BTW the R134A refrigerant is cheaper on Ebay if you already have the gauge and connector for filling up.
