Hi,
I always seem to be getting a greasy front screen from the inside.
I have cleaned it using vinegar...it remains clean for a day then its greasy again.
what could be causing this?
the car in question is an Audi Coupe 1984 B reg.
Could it be something to do with dirty heater vents or something else?

Apparently it is a smeary film, generated by the chemical reaction of sunlight on interior plastics. You have perhaps noticed that it is worse in the recent hot weather? There are some packs of interioir screen wipes that can be bought at Halfords. The old hands recommend the use of scrunched up newspaper used with a little bit of vinegar.

A leaking heater matrix can give this problem. Any smell of anti-freeze when heater is operated?

No smells of coolant from the heater vents.
I also notice that my centre "cold air vent" can actually blow out cool air even in this weather. Its not aircon or anything, just a normal vent.
How does that work!

I used to have a 1986 VW Polo...so some of the materials will have been similar and it too used to suffer from what you mention in certain weather conditions. Mostly either very cold or very hot as the blower would be on most of the time. It certainly sounds as though you also have road and engine derived hydrocarbons in the ventiliation ducting and unless you can clean it all out you may just be stuck with it.
Cold and hot conditions (as at the moment) are also associated with low humidity. Low humidity increases the static charge that materials will store. Humid conditions will let static dissipate more freely. A static charge to your windscreen is just the right thing to attract all of the very fine atmospheric pollution. Also, as it has not frequently rained recently, atmospheric pollutants will be at a high level.
Perhaps a clean with alcohol (or a mild solution of washing powder) and an antistatic wipe may keep it clear for longer.

think red baron has the answer if somwhat technical
i was going to suggest if i have a car with a bad dose of internal smear i always get the gunwash on a cloth out, kills all known smears dead.......

It can be caused by people who have greased up the dashboard and other plastics with those dreadful silicone oil sprays such as dashboard sheen, cockpit shine, back to black etc...

puts his hand up...........guilty as charged ....................but it does look nice afterwards so long as you arent riding into the sun...
