£5000-£8000 - hermajesty

We're thinking of selling our two cars to raise some cash.
We should get about £16-18000 for both and will then spend about £5000+ on a replacement.

Is it worth looking at older prestige cars (my preference) or going with newer middle market cars?

What do you think?

Your budget is similar to mine and I have decided to go for a used E39 5 Series. If you get a facelift model it passes for a more expensive car both inside and out. Very nice cars indeed.

Yes that one looks good. Post 2000 then?

I'm hankering for a Lexus. I hear that they can do huuuuuge mileage without problems?

Never thought I'd post this - Mondeo TDCi.

I never thought I'd post 'Buy an old BMW' on a forum whilst somebody ELSE was posting 'No, get a Mondeo' :-)

I've been reading through the posts and the mondeo does come up again and again.
I want something more luxurious though (fur coat, no knickers!).

You might get a leggy E39, bit like everything else in Prestigeland at this level a potential moneypit.

Hmmm I'd have thought the sub £5k market is more where the leggy E39's are plentiful, £8k affords you some of the better ones. Especially if you get an SE with Cloth.

Subaru Legacy saloon. Fun to drive, about as reliable as you can buy and relatively cheap.

But so horrifically bland inside that I don't think many can put up with it.

I am strangely drawn to luxury and gadgets. Call me shallow but I would like a bit of that.

Get a Legacy with a Lux pack then. If you enjoy driving a well-sorted car try one.
