Vauxhall Astra Estate 1.7 TDI LS - loftus
Been looking for a new car as current Punto (don't laugh) is nearing the end of its commuting life for me and I'm going to pass it on to son as he is learning to drive. Want something with a bit more power but economical because am making frequent long motorway journeys.

Now I am first to admit I know next to nothing about cars. Saw this at a local dealer:-

Its in good condition, seems to fit the profile in terms of power/fuel economy/insurance group/tax band - but doing some research seems quite a bit overpriced. I know its a dealer and you should expect to pay more but this much?
I'll be a cash buyer so do you reckon I have much haggle room here? Is this a decent car in the first place?
Definately a situation where ignorance isn't bliss!
Sorry for the complete lack of knowledge - be gentle!

How about a Citreen Xsara estate instead? More comfortable, better engine, plenty of that sort of age going for under £5,000, such as tinyurl.com/z478w

its looks about 2000 over priced. you could get a good tdci mondeo for that money..

cargiant.co.uk has an identical car - age, mileage, colour and spec - for £4,860, to give you an idea of what you should be looking at after haggling.

If it's in good nick and there's 10% of haggling margin built in, it's not overpriced.

Interesting - maybe I shouldn't cross it off my list after all. Thanks for that.

Guess you've read the link to our left - Car By Car Breakdown - but I'll add my bit.

Astra is apretty well built & competent car, with the WORST seats, as far as I'm concerned!

I had one for a week, which I ran around before delivering to a customer - it was as if someone was constantly forcing a fist, into the centre of my back!!

Unless you find a sporty/very well spec model, they all have the same seats.

Saying that, plenty of drivers DON'T find this a problem, so do take one for a longish test drive first!!

Thanks for that Vansboy - its pretty important as on my long runs currently I am driving for 4 - 4 1/2 hours - too long to sit in discomfort whatever the rest of the cars like!
Please feel free to keep alternative suggestions coming. I really am too thick with regard to cars to refuse good advice.
