What is the best fuel system cleaner (additive). I have used redex and wynns before, but did not record if there was a change in efficiency. I drive a 95m ford escort 1.6 zetec.

Also what is the best petrol. I normally fill up with asda or sainsbury petrol. I have read that Shell may be better as it contains more detergent. Would it be better using super unleaded such as shell opimax? I have read my manual and I think that it was made to run on normal 95RON petrol.

I can't comment on the use of Shell, but I use Redex and it certainly cleaned up my grubby carb., particularly the second venturi which wasn't used much before I got it ;-)

Following recommendation here I also use 1/2 litre isopropyl alcohol once per year in a fill to get rid of any water droplets, though when I took it out last week my tank didn't look any worse for wear inside having used only supermarket fuel for 15 years!

These are perennial issues, as much in the realm of faith as of fact.

For what it's worth, I follow HJ's preference for Shell (or Texaco, and perhaps some others now) and I am an Optimax believer. Whether Optimax yields greater economy or not, there seems to be evidence for its good cleaning properties. As for an additive, the VAG product (part number G 001 700 03) is something that HJ originally told me about and I've used it regularly ever since it not only cured my Audi's cool-running problems but also improved its starting, after just one dose. My mechanic rates it too.

Search the forum on "Optimax" or "fuel additive" and you'll find plenty of other opinions.

If you do mainly short runs, a good regular "blast" for a few miles will help a great deal.

I really don't see any point though in using Optimax on a regular basis on an 11 to 12-year-old car, apart from the odd tankful.

Really? My experiences have shown me that this is the best age of car to be using optimax. My 12 year old VR6 had nothing but optimax in it's later years and had never ran so good. However, I do agree that some other cars may not have the same benefit.

We are talking about two different animals here. Ish has a 95m ford escort 1.6 zetec.

If you recall, or perhaps didn't see, the Fifth Gear tests on Optimax, an ordinary engine remained an ordinary engine, but the better ones produced more power.

Forté is a well regarded fuel system cleaner, but not available to the general public. I buy it (or used to) from a local independant garage.

Would be interesting if i did a power run on my Ford Ka & see if its still 60bhp, however its more economical on a longer run on Optimax.

You used to be able to buy it from Vauxhall dealers and some branches of ATS. Maybe still can.

Have you try Royal Purple? I totally love it. Although it's a bit more expensive than the other cleaning products, you should try it to see how well it works.

You can read more about Royal Purple and other brands.

Good luck ;)

Another old thread resurrected.

Funny how often that seems to involve an ulterior motive.

"As a 3-in-1 additive, the Royal Purple Max-Clean is very specific with what it can do. The product advertises its ability to enhance fuel economy by 3.2% and surge horsepower up to 2.6% while curbing emissions of hydrocarbon by an average of 12%, mono-nitrogen oxides by 13% and carbon monoxide by 18%."

Wow. (As Gordon Ramsay would say.)

Cynical? Moi?
