I've got a few stone chips where bear metal is showing. The paint colour is white and I intend to use white nail varnish as a temporary measure to protect the chip from rusting. Is this a good idea, i.e. will the nail varnish (and nail varnish remover) damage the paintwork in any way?

Why not just pick up some brush on touch up and do the job only once?
Any sign of rust on the bare metal , use a bit of the Kurust/Loctite stuff first.

Best thing to do is try it on an inconspicuous area, like somewhere under the bonnet, to see if it reacts.

You could put some eye-liner around the headlights, and mascara on the front wings while you're at it.

is it that hard to walk into halford or your dealer and buy a touch up kit? do it once and do it right!

Whilst I agree with some of the comments about using proper touch up paints, can someone answer the actual question posed by the OP as to whether or not nail varnish will damage the paintwork if used only as temporary measure.

I would not like to try it to find out,Without actually knowing whats in nail varnish, petroleum spirit is I think involved.
but as to what damage it would cause is debatable and unless someone has tried it?,I think impossible to say.
I think thats the first time anyone has asked this question, certainly not been asked myself ,and would not say its worth the try !

it will melt the surrounding paint steve.o unless its water based

If the OP is determined that cosmetics are meant for the car, I would probably suggest lipstick as a better temporary coating rather than nail polish - much easier to remove later. Sorry, I can't advise on brand or shade!!
However, I agree with the other respondants - touch up pens are cheap and easily obtainable - there's no need to bodge!

if your hell bent on not buying a touch up pen....some household gloss white paint should be safe to use and will keep out the weather
|
Why not just cover with polish. Most are water resistant and give time to repaint damaged section

You seem to be very clued up on nailvarnish?? IS there something you arent telling us??:)But will agree, from experience on a Cavalier I had, I tried red to match in with a lower body stonechip and it did 'melt' the surrounding area, made it more unsightly
