I am aware of an 1800 Zetec unit that has done 270k miles in a 1996 Mondeo. It sounds nearly as new but the unit has had a service every 10k plus an interim oil change half way through. My own Zetec engine Mondeo has done 105k and still sounds sweet. The 1.6,1.8 and 2.0 litre Zetec E engines are very durable if run on the the correct 5w30 oil.

With just the normal servicing with good oil they are certainly capable of 200K - and probably a lot more. One of the toughest units around. Regular anti-freeze changes are vital though. They can eat core plugs if it's left too long or is the wrong spec.

Agree with the above. My dad's 94 2.0 is on 190k and it's still quiet and smooth. It uses about half a litre of oil in 6,000 miles. He hasn't done compression or oil pressure tests, but in terms of noise and performance it shows no signs of wear at all.

Runs on Ford Formula E 5W/30 oil changed every 6k with a genuine Motorcraft filter.

I worked at a Ford dealer in 1993-1994 when the Mondeo was new on the market. We were told that the original 2.0 Zetec unit was designed from the outset with turbocharging in mind (for a hot version of the Mondeo that never actually happened). This means the bottom end is significantly "over-specced" for a naturally aspirated engine. How true this is I don't know, but it was certainly a popular belief at the dealership.

Cheers
