Could someone please clarify for me whether or not the saloons have rear seats that will fold down. I have been looking at the tourers, but there are a lot more saloons on the market. I need to fit my fishing rods in. Cheers Paul

No, they do not fold down as standard. You could get a though load system as an option.

Even if they don't have the through load system fitted as an option its very easy to knock the hole through on your own. The cars usually have the hole covered with a metal plate thats only spot welded in, 5 mins with a large screwdriver to break the spot welds and remove the plate.

Fold down the rear arm rest and remove the flap behind it (only secured with velcro) and you will see the sound proofing/padding that is also pre-cut in the shape of the hatch behind it. Its a 2 minute job with a stanley knife to remove the padding.

Sounds like alot of faffing, but it will be alot easier than searching for months for a car with the through load option.

This sounds similar to converting a smart forfour to 'lounge concept seating' (don't you love marketing men?!) - i.e make the front seats push forward so you can sit in the back and use the front seats as tables. It's an expensive optional extra, but if you don't order it simply remove the plastic cover off the seat adjustment pulley and remove metal lug which is welded on the adjuster to prevent seat going forwards! Once removed you too have lounge concept seating!

Unbeleivable! You'd have thought that rather going to all that hassle and expense they'd just make it standard accross the range.

If its a '97 or early '98 6 cyl don't forget to check if it has had its engine replaced - many had premature wear due to the cyl' liners.

Would it be reasonable to assume that if the block has lasted this long, then it will be OK for the foreseable future?

Unless it had abnormally low mileage I would say yes. There is no more high sulphur petrol available (which was the main cause of the bore liner erosion) so if its fine now, it will be fine in the future...unless the owner starts using high suplhur petrol from somewhere.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I think you have confirmed that I need to get a tourer (2 rod bags won't fit through the hole where the armrest is). Incidentaly, do the seats fold down in these at this age. I know the newer ones do but I can't afford one of them.
