Driving home home after the game, it was heart-rending to see so many grown men crying into their beer outside the pub.
I was aquaplaning on the tears.

|
drbe were you not flagging at the end?
|
|
I didn't watch the footie - well, not much of it anyway. I prefer a game played by men with oval balls.

i watched the match yesterday out of patriotism, and now dont have to watch football for at least 4 years again if all they can do is practise kicking the ball to each other and occasionally booting it up to the other end (which is 6 bus lengths away i think?)...................best of british?...........very poor i thought.................

I thougt this was a motoring forum.
We could turn it into a new game, spot the England flags that remain on cars the longest after England have been knocked out.
|
My German flags are on back-order.
What an embarrassment to the country Rooney was, highlighting the fact that he's nothing more than an overpaid, uneducated, inbred thug.
|
|
My thoughts this morning was that the Engerland team is a metaphor for our beknighted coountry. Brilliant individuals, chav manners, a broken down community and a faliure to undertake any collective activity in the face fof global competition.

England were never good enough to win the World Cup, but I am very dissappointed, especially after buying a new LCD.
What really upset me yesterday was the death of one of my heroes, the great Fred Trueman. What a bowler he was, and a great man.
|
|
i agree quizman but as the wife said when we heard it on the radio yesterday "he had a good innings"
|
Trueman was no less of a sporting thug in his own way than Rooney.
Thats no complaint, btw - you need sportsmen of a certain "mentality"
Stiill fabulous bowler.

And Beckham (in the post match news conference) spoils it all by using the "myself" word most innapropriatly. Sums it up.
|
Shame Pugugly,Mr Beckham did not have the benefit of an extended education and its unreasonable to make fun of the way he conducts himself in press interviews.
He does have a nice collection of exotic cars though, and all the 'overpaid'footballers are great consumers of motoring exotica.

And so it begins. As a Manchester United supporter I couldn't be any less surprised at people's determination to blame United players.
At least this time you've all got two to pick from.
I'm truly flabbergasted by the comments on Rooney on here though. Acted like a thug? Stamp? have you even seen the incident, or do you just automatically believe what you read in the papers?
Rooney was fouled by two portuguese players at the same time, one of them going to ground to trip him, and stumbled, stepping on 'that region'. The idea that it was a deliberate stamp is ludicrous.
As for his 'violent conduct' of a gentle waist high push, give me a break. He did not in any way shame or form lose control, as the media are determined to portray it, and if any of the other English players were willing to show the passion for their country that he does, we wouldn't have gone through the entire tournament without a single good performance.
As for Ronaldo, his part in it wasn't exactly dignified, but if people were willing to apporach it with anything other than a hate United bias they'd realise that the decision was made by the terrible ref, not Ronaldo. It was a ridiculous sending off, and it ruined the game and Englands chances.
I summary, yes, of course it was Rooneys fault (or was it Ronaldo's? Can't remember which tabloid to believe), just like last time it was Nevilles, and the time before that it was Beckham. Any bets on which United player will be to blame next time?
|
Quite right TL, David Beckham is a sympathetic figure whatever people may say about his big entourage and alleged aloofness. And it is indeed unkind to sneer at him for being physical and working-class. Same about Rooney, who may still be a little louche (he's a child of 20 for God's sake) and thuggish but has a God-given talent and a lot of heart where it counts.
I haven't noticed a significant absence of these qualities in any of the teams. How many philosophy PhDs play for Brazil, or even France?
If England had got away with last night and gone a bit further perhaps, would people have been praising them instead of heaping opprobrium on their heads in this sour-grapes sort of way?
Was it in Saddam's Iraq a few years ago that a football team thought to have let the rais down was severely punished on returning home? It happened somewhere anyway.
I can't help feeling that some of those calling the England team wussies etc. for losing what is after all only a game, something that can be won or lost whatever the prospects appear to be before the event, are being cruel and despotic, or would be if they had the power.
|
|
And Beckham (in the post match news conference) spoils it all by using the "myself" word most innapropriatly. Sums it up.
Who cares? I watched a grammar based quiz show the other night on BBC2, and they took great delight in counting how many times Rooney and Beckham said erm or 'you know' in press conferences. To be frank it was quite sickening, watching people that I might have previously held in esteem preening themselves because they're better orators than a 20 year old obviously shy lad. Well congratulations, aren't you just such excellent people, to be able to judge in that way. God forbid someone who is there because he's a footballer not be an excellent public speaker.

And hear hear Bazza. You are decent.
|
Bazza, If you had seen Ronaldo pleading with the ref to get Rooney sent off, If youhad seen Ronaldo wind rooney up by butting him before the game, and if you has seen the sly wink to the bench when Rooney was sent off then you would know that
1/ Ronaldo is a very intelegent and canny footballer
2/ Ronaldo is a cheat with the sporting morals of a snakes belly
3/ Rooney is going to punch Ronaldo when they get back to training
(if rooney needs a hand he can give me a ring)
4/ Ronaldo and Rooney will destroy team harmony and will not be able to survive in the same team.
Dont see where knocking Man Utd comes into it. The above is about individuals.

I didn't see the headbutt, and I didn't see the wink.
I did see a terrible refereeing decision, and while Ronaldos actions were horrible, the referee is responsible for his own actions, not Ronaldo.
|
|
But I'm sure it won't stop effigies of him being hung outside pubs alongside those of Rooneys, it's be terrible to break with the traditions of this fine country.
|
Now thats the trouble with this fine country, it has lost its traditions. If we stuck with ancient tradition Ronaldos head should be impaled on a pike staff and paraded at every league ground this season and his torso mouldering in the iron gibbet at caxton for the next season
BTW bazza, do I detect a slight chip on shoulder? seems to be a common ailment for red devils....

I pity poor Wayne Rooney
he drives a 300C
|
The only time we played well in the whole tournament was when we were down to 10 men. Did Rooney getting sent off lose us the game? No. Did Beckham getting injured lose us the game? No. Did us not being able to score from 12 yards lose us the game? Yes.
Did everyone see the same game as me or not as it appeared to me that Rooney getting sent off lifted our game to a level we should have seen against Paraguay, Trinidad, Sweden and Ecuador?
We lost the game because we can't score from 12 yards. If we had won on penalties, then the media would have been writing about brave lions, but instead they have to crucify someone instead. Thats why I don't read many newspapers, it is all about making money and not reporting the facts.

Just to put my tuppence worth in (and remember I am Scottish)
- after watching it several times, I am still not sure whether Rooney was stamping on him or trying to free his boot. However, I feel that what has happened is so typical of the whole English media frenzy that surrounds your team. Rooney is only 19 or 20, yet has had the pressure of all the journalists, players and fans on his shoulders saying that without him, they will do nothing. How is he supposed to cope with that at that age, no matter how much money or footballing skill someone has, it doesn't give them the maturity or intelligence to deal with it.
- Ronaldo is not the first or last player to try to get someone sent off or punished in a game, much as I hate it, it is a fact of life in our game nowadays. Look at Rivaldo four years ago, Henry last week. Don't even try to claim that no Man U / Chelsea / England players dive and cheat. They do.
- If I was English, I would be getting tore into my own team, players and manager rather than blaming everyone else! Why his choice of strikers? Why are you not all lambasting Rooney for his actions?
- SGE, with all due respect, how hard is it to pick an England team? His actions and body language show no sense of inspired coaching. Personally, I think he has taken the P with the FA for so long and got away with it as they would need to pay him off otherwards.
- Remember Alex Ferguson is Scottish, so don't be surprised if Ronaldo is named new Man U captain!! Seriously , there is talk of him going to Real Madrid anyway, but I would love to be a fly in the wall once Ferguson gets Rooney into a room by themselves and don't be surprised if he gives him similar treatment to what he gave Beckham. Remember Man U did not want Rooney to go and then were not allowed access to the medical people etc.
- After all this, I actually won a bet with my brother - I stated that after all the hype of Rooney, he would play, he wouldn't score and he would get sent off for violent conduct. That is exactly what he did and remember, he is the all round English hero and saviour!
|
English Media frenzy? I remember the scottish media friendly when scotland were in the world cup, They even reported they had a chance of winning it.
Mind you
That was a very long time ago

>>I did see a terrible refereeing decision
Almost as terrible as the decisions which had Portugal starting without a couple of their best.
Rooney is a plonker. He may or may not have intended to stamp exactly where he did, but he did know his foot was going to go down on the other player. And even that to one side, as the ref is dealing with it Rooney is still pushing other players in the chest and foul-mouthing.
He got what he deserved and no more than he woudl have got Ronaldo given half a chance.
After so many years it ought to be apparant that 1/4 finals is about England's level.

In the context of being 20 years old the word "Shy" and having carnal knowledge of a Grandmother for cash don't fir too well together!
|
|
If he is over 20 now he wasn't at the time of the meeting with "The Old Slapper"!
|
|
21 on May the second according to the interweb. Still he should be able to speak by now.

31 - DoB 2.5.75 - I'm still living in the nineties - heavens !

Even if we had beaten portugal we were on borrowed time. With Rooney suspended the striker shortage would have been even more critical.
I have now switched my support to Italy, who have the unique ability to go all the way by only playing as well as they need to.

Are you absolutely sure AS?
I thought paying for sex was an indication of shyness. In fact in this day and age it so obviously is that I#m really surprised by your comment.
Poor little brute. Leave him alone.
And by the way, he was being messily foul=tackled by two opposing players at once, and bulldozing his way through them without losing the ball. It's what he does. and no one can prove he trod on the guy's family jewels on purpose,.
In fact the guy played on in a way that few of us would if Rooney had just stamped on our privates on purpose.
|
It's only a game.
Precisely.. other events for Saturday are far more significant, like the anniversary of the battle of the Somme.
When you ponder this, Beckhams crocodile tears are irrelevant.
