I am planning to sell my BMW, 5-series, yr 2000, W reg, 89000 miles, petrol, manual, FSH as a private sale. I have looked at various valuation websites and the valuations cover a very wide range. Any idea which tends to be the most accurate? I guess at the end of the day it is how much a buyer is willing to pay, but they will be looking at the same price guides as me. Here is what I found, in each case I am quoting the private sale price:

Glass's consumer valuation: £5800
Whatcar: £3445
Parker's (not mileage adjusted) : £5245
Wisebuyers: £3686

thanks

Have you tried looking left and clicking on the Auto Trader ?
This will probably give you a good view of asking prices.

Glass's consumer valuation: £5800

Are you positive that the Glass valuatio is this high? Highest of all valuations?

5-Series valuations are very specification sensitive.

Glass's p/x valuation top book is £4,640 for a 520i SE automatic, for instance.

However to give an idea of what is a realistic private sale price it would be helpful to know:

a. engine;
b. manual or automatic;
c. specification - leather, air con/climate, alloys, CD player etc;
d. colour

If a 520i SE auto saloon in silver, with black leather, CD player and alloys is worth £5k (as an example) then a regular 520i in solid blue, with cloth, manual transmission and steel wheels would probably be under £4k.

a. 1991 cc petrol
b. manual
c. cloth, steel wheels, no optional extra equipment over the standard spec. It is the 520i base model, not SE unfortunately. So manual air-con rather than climate. Cassette rather than CD (although it has the wiring for a CD auto-changer in the boot).
d. Titan Silver

It has full BMW dealer service history, in case that affects the price..

Any opinion on private sale price would be much appreciated!

thanks

Aren't 520s of this era 2200cc and 170bhp?

No, the 520i gained the 2.2 170bhp Straight Six when the car was facelifted in September 2000. The first examples are X reg.

I used the Glass's valuation service on their website where you pay £2.75 for a valuation. It adjusts the price for any optional extras and mileage. The private sale price it came up with is £5800. It looks up the exact model type on a database on the basis of the registration number, so there is no ambiguity over the model type (for example, the valuation correctly says it is the 2.0 litre model rather than the 2.2 litre upgrade that arrived at about that time).

The other prices it quoted were:
trade-in excellent: £3820
trade-in average: £3390
trade-in below average: £2950
retail: £7180

There's something very wrong here.

Do you really believe that a trader is going to make £3k profit on a car he's paid less than £4k for?

What worth are the guides and so-called bibles?

I paid for an online valuation of my 03 BMW 525d Sport Touring. Glass's says £15k (mileage adjusted and matching the condition parameters they specify), all dealers say £10k-£12.5k in part-ex.

What's the point of paying for Glass's if it is so way off?
