Can't go far wrong with an MX-5

Toyota Celica targa top can be had for around £1K. And at the end of the day a Toyota's a Toyota...
... and a worn-out car is a worn-out car.
What the original poster seemed to want to know was whether that £999 convertible had any life left in it without spending a fortune on repairs.

Of course you can yes. Unless you have a phobia of older cars like some on here, you can get a tidy cabriolet for under £2000.
All id say is first try and go german or japanese as the Fords and Vauxhalls tend to get a bit ropey when older, and do alot of research on the cars to be considered so you know what to look for.
If it was my money, id look for a tidy Golf Convertible - yes its an old design, but it was well thought out and a capable car which you can still use as a daily driver.
That said, buy a dog and it will put you off for life.
Nothing wrong with a Celica either, but quite a rare beast.

Two on Autotrader at £750 as we speak. More than likely Jap imports but low mileage verses little use I'll take low mileage every time.

You can pick up a very tidy 205 CTi for £1500 - good looks combined with good performance and handling.

Is second that, but try and find one thats unmodified and looks like its been looked after, ie not smokey.

I was going to say MK1 Golf. Manual hood, no PAS, aircon, electric windows etc to worry about. Zero depreciation, just check that the fuel filler neck is'nt rotted through and that its had caring owners.
2 Dirty VW diesels and a Honda with an 18 inch blade

No power steering on the Mk1 and steering VERY heavy.
OK for hairy bikers types but smaller women will have problems.
