Hmmm...I didn't know you could pick up Boras so cheaply.
One look at the Reliabiltiy Index has more or less made my mind up (Still the Toledo) but I thought I'd throw it open to you guys anyway.
Also, Cruise Control wasn't standard on the Bora - amazing!

Which engine?, IIRC it was on the V5 which is good to drive, characterful.

1.9 TDI. No chance I could afford to tax, insure, or run a V5!

One (slightly odd) question: how often do you expect to carry large items in the boot? The Toledo has a narrower opening for the boot and back doors than the Bora - so if you buy a TV, for example, you'll have difficulty bringing it home in a Toledo.
Worth bearing in mind if you're a frequent visitor to your local DIY depot, otherwise its simply a question of do you want to pay a bit more for the better fit and finish of the VW cabin?

I've read about this, but thanks for mentioning it as I might not have.
It's not really an issue - we have a van in the family. I think the biggest thing that will go in there is my pushbike, and luggage when going on holiday.

I have a 1.6 SE Bora - it has all the bells and whistles apart from cruise control (which I hate) and traction control (ditto), which was in the next spec up for its particular year (MY2000).
I've had it for three years and it's never given a minute's trouble apart from the central locking occasionally going out of sync using the driver's door switch; it had 46,500 miles on the clock when I acquired it.
The Bora and Toledo (along with the A3/4 and Skoda Octavia) are basically the same cars, but designed to suit different markets.
i'm a VW fan, but wouldn't have quibbled if it had been a Toledo that was on the drive rather than the Bora. In fact the Seat and Skoda models given you VW quality for a lower initial purchase price and are often even better equipped.

That's the thing - they are basically the same price! I wouldn't have though I could afford a 2000 plate (ish) VW diesel for about £4000, but I can.

I didn't think I would have a Bora for the price I paid at the time (generosity of a pal whose been in the used car business for many years); I thought a Vento would be more within my grasp after two Jettas...:-)
Go and get it now...:-)

Cruise control can be retro fitted to vag cars with fly by wire engines for around £200 or less at maindealers or independants
2 Dirty VW diesels and a Honda with an 18 inch blade

One of our local dealers has had a 51 plate Bora V5 170bhp on offer for £5,195 - been sold according to the website:

Purely from looks wise i'd go for the bora - never been a fan of the golf but the bora looks better with it's squarer headlights.

The Bora has class, where the Toledo has flair, in styling. On a possibly more significant note wasn't the higher-powered diesel Bora (which was equivalent to the Toledo diesel, which was only ever offered 110bhp) the 115bhp original PD engine? And isn't it possible that the price-equivalent Bora you've seen is the 90bhp version? Cause that would explain it...
I'd have the 115 PD Bora, if it was on offer, the SEAT Toledo otherwise.
|
I'm glad you mentioned PD. If the VW has it, and the SEAT doesn't, I think I'll go with the SEAT.
I'm after a non common rail, non PD, fairly simple diesel. Most reports state that they will still do 50mpg, so I can't really see the advantage!
|
|
Non of the early SEAT's had it (PD-tech). If it's an S-spec it definately doesn't, the SE may or may not (but if stated at 110bhp it won't, only the 130 does, and the 110 ran alongside til it's demise). Looking at CbC the Bora did get fitted with the 110 early on, but remember that an all-silver TDI badge definately would indicate it's a 90bhp model, which was never on the Toledo.
|
Do you know if it is possible to fit the 6 speed box to the 1.9 110hp in the Toledos I'm looking at?
That would be sweet...

Lol, I don't know, but can I ask why the change from 306 HDi to Bora/Toledo TDi?
|
Fair question - a number of reasons really.
The main one is that I can't get comfy ni the 306. I've tried, and given it a chance, but I just can't. The accelerator pedal area is just too cramped, and holding the car at 30mph is agony.
Also, I'm not entirely convinced by the benefits of common rail in an engine which only puts out 90bhp, especially with regards to the costs if things go wrong.
|
|
Ah that's what I suspected - cost of the HDi. I assume this is why you're reluctant to buy the VW PD solution! Good knowledge for me - I was considering a 306 HDi myself...
|
|
Don't get me wrong, mine has never given the slightest hint of any trouble. But running two vehicles, I need to know I've got the most bullet proof things going. Hence buying a Honda, and an older tech diesel!
