Our 1999 Astra dti has major problems and we need a very cheap runaround asap. We are in Gloucester and the closer to there the better. Can anyone help? Many Thanks Stuart

Autotrader website or local paper, something like a Nissan Micra (the 1993-2002 model). A P-reg will set you back about £800-£1000 for a good one. Engines are bullet-proof (they use a timing chain, not a belt). Something like a Hyundai Accent is also a good runaround, but make sure it's got history and at least 6 months MOT.
Basically, stick to the Japanese/Korean brands and you should get a decent buy. My current car is a G-reg Nissan Sunny which I bought for £400 a couple of years ago - still running.

Get yourself a 205, pref with low keeper count, and elderly owner/seller. They don't rust and always sell.
Autotrader - get dialling.

My uncle bought a P plate Suzuki Baleno 1.6 last year as a main dealer part-ex with 9 months MOT for 500 quid. Used it every day since, hasn't serviced it, hasn't done anything whatsoever to it apart from a new MOT (which it passed first go) and it hasn't let him down.
Something Japanese and unfashionable has to be the way to go.

There's a company called Cleave Motor Salvage, just off the Bristol road, close to the Ford dealer. They deal in damaged repairables, but do have a selection of older cars with minimal damage that are still classed by the insurance as a write off, but that are perfectly sevicable, if you can deal with running around in a car with a slightly damaged rear quarter or whatever.
Some as low as £295.
