Which brand of tyre to buy - 3 choices - UncleR
I've been quoted roughly the same price for three brands of tyre and have no real idea which to go for. I don't know the exact tyre model (which I know might make a difference) but based on brand alone for a set of 205/60/15v should I go for Avons, BF Goodrich or GT?

In the absence of any advice I would probably plump for the BF's simply because I have seen more of their advertising!

Thanks in advance

Without a doubt I'd go for the Avons - I've had 20,000 miles out of mine so far(!!) Road-holding is pretty good, tread pattern is pretty too if you care about that! BF's aren't bad from what I've heard, not sure about the GT's tho (Kwikfit sells them as a cheapy brand, which immediately raises suspicion!)

How much have you been quoted for these tyres? They are the same size as on my Passat, I have been quoted £75 per tyre for Michelins at Costco, inc balance, valve, disposal and VAT.

IMHO Michelins are better tyres than the three you mention.

@ quizman - Total drive-away price of around £265 for a full set for all 3 options (give or take a couple of quid).

So that's £66.25 per tyre - go on blackcircles.com, can get Falken ZE512s for £50 a tyre (fully fitted) - absolute bargain!

I just got a pair of these in 195/60 H15 for £80 fitted, balanced and with VAT. Suit my old plodder just fine and much better in the wet than the Michelins that came off.

Directional tread pattern too which is unusual at this price.

For another £9, I'd go for the michelins.

I'd go for the cheaper Falkens - you'd pay 50% more for the Michelins, but would you get 50% more miles out of them?

I've been ripped off before buying brandnames (pirellis), double the price of "Federal" tyres, but lasting the same mileage and with no noticable difference in handling.

So with Blackcircles, how long do I have to wait to get them fitted? The fitter is who I was going to anyway! I need these done asap - this Friday. Can the Blackcircles method get things done quickly?

In that case I'd phone the place direct and ask for that brand of tyre - that way you're not paying Blackcircles their commission! If it works out cheaper to go through B/circles, I'm not sure how long it takes, although I'm assured they're alright to do business with.

I've had good experiences with Avon - good wear from them and good handling too.

'Steer' clear of Avons.

On a total of three occasions on two different cars I have had tread separation issues with ZV1's. The last episode the tyre actually split open where the tread met the tyre wall. Luckily the alloy wasn't damaged.

Avon's head office attitude to these serious problems with tyre construction on those ZV1's was abysmal to say the least.

Conflicting messages! Two say Avons are good, one says bad!

I see the value in the Black Circles deal (total saving of £60) but that is for Falkens. On a like for like basis Black Circle want £310 for the Avons so it sounds like my local ATS is pretty reasonable with the deal he is offering at the moment.

(ps I'm sure I put this in the technical thread where I thought it belonged)

I moved it in the belief that I thought you'd get a better and more varied response in discussion as more people purchase tyres on this side of the forum than service or repair their vehicle.

I had a pair of Avon tyres on the front our C5, to replace the original Michelins. They lasted just 13K miles, so they definitely don't match up to Michelin for wear.

I had Avons on my Xsara VTR. I was really pleased with them - good handling and stable and grippy in the wet. Pleased until I noticed that I was good for 6 points - they'd worn completely evenly, but down to about 1.5 mm in about 14k miles. A quick glance and they looked okay, and I'd (stupidly) not checked properly.

Very unimpressed with wear rate, I replaced with Michelin, which I'd previously got about 32k out of.

I used to use michelins on every car i had until getting less than 20000 out of two front pairs.I think at the time they were mx2's and i cannot remember when that tyre was being made but have never used mithelin again. My tyres at the moment are oem brigestone'on the golf and pirelli( not sure i like these) on the focus estate.Ever since the michelins if im buying i use conti's but dont think there tops for lasting just good allrounders.

I have never found a tyre that lasted longer than Michelins.

Sounds like this is a very subjective issue. I expect everyone's opinions are valid as we all drive in different styles, different conditions and different mileages. So what works well for some may not for others. It is very easy to start letting the cost of this creep up and considering I do a low mileage and with the arrival of a new tiny passenger imminent, my days of hard cornering are over!
