Have seen several questions about insuring car when buying, borrowing etc. Found this site which seems to cover several different occasions when you need instant cover www.tempcover.com
Wonder if any other insurance companies will pick up on the idea.

norwich union already do short term car insurance. go to their website, click on motor on the left hand side menu and you should see it there.
i have used it many times for trips to the airport using someone my cousins car.
you just put in your details and they send you your policy via email that you can print out.

Yep, I used Norwich Union's cover for a day on SUnday on my dad's car.
Any car, insurance groups 1-17 is £10.50 for 24 hours cover.
Not bad, I thought, considering most insurance companies charge an admin fee of a similar amount just to amend your existing policy when addding a new temporary driver.

Section 147 RTA 88:
147.?(1) A policy of insurance shall be of no effect for the purposes of this Part of this Act unless and until there is delivered by the insurer to the person by whom the policy is effected a certificate (in this Part of this Act referred to as a "certificate of insurance") in the prescribed form and containing such particulars of any conditions subject to which the policy is issued and of any other matters as may be prescribed.
I will let Mark explain how they seem to get round this...

I'd have thought that the emailed document you printed out would act as 'a certificate of insurance'.

No doubt the insurance database, updated in real time, with plod access would be seen as a plus for this sort of thing.
|
|
The Motor Insurance Database (MID) in not updated in real-time. Each insurer currently has up to 14 days to update the database with relevant vehicles. Follow this link for information on which vehicles need to be notified - www.insuremotortrader.co.uk/mid.html. There is a link to the main MID website.

Brokers usually immediately issue a cover note if you take out insurance through them, so I don't see how a printed version from an e-mail attachment is any different, especially as the insurance company will have a record of the arrangement. This will be duplicated in the form of the e-mail(s) and the cover note attachment for the recipient.

if you look at www.swiftcover.com/en/home/tabid/52/Default.aspx (who do not have call centres), they say
Question / Issue
If I print the certificate myself will it be legal?
Answer / Solution
Yes. However do be aware that if you have a very poor quality printer some post offices may not accept it as valid proof for Road Tax purposes. For more help contact our Help Team by emailing help@swiftcover.com and they will be happy to print and send you a copy of the document you need, however there may be a charge for this service.

They don't, they ignore it - pretty much the same approach with carrying your insurance document and a police producer.

Local car dealer provide 7 days free cover through Norwich Union when you buy a car, my daughter bought a pre-reg Panda and had this. It suits the car dealer as they can get the car taxed without the customer bringing in an insurance certificate, she picked the car up a couple of days after deciding to buy.
She didn't really need it as already insured, but attached to the insurance certificate was a quote for continuing the cover that looked competitive so maybe we'll try them next time.
