Laguna II CD/Radio panel

Laguna II CD/Radio panel - goinginaguna
Can anyone explain to me what the little red panel on my cd/radio is. It looks like an infra red sensor for a remote control or something but my dealer assures me not. Can someone explain this please (not having the manual doesn't help).
