A friend has moved across the water believes he can buy cars in UK and drive them over to Ireland to sell at a profit. I don't believe it can be as simple as this, but looking on the web, cars do seem to be very expensive over there. Why is this so ?

For example:

Focus 1.4 LX 5DR Engine: 1.4 Petrol Price: ?15,950 Year: 2004 Colour: Vitro Mileage: 31,855 miles / 51,266 kilometers Owners: 1 Doors: 5

Mondeo 1.8 ZET 5D Engine: 1.8 Petrol Price: ?29,000 Year: 2006 Colour: Tonic Blue Mileage: 188 miles /

Because there is a tax to be paid on the cars. Vehicle Registration Tax. you have to tell the government what the car is, and they calculate the average selling price and then tax you.

For example your focus will attract a tax of approx 25%

Herewith the Irish Goverment link to calculate the VRT tax due.

Its a percentage of the retail Irish price of the car and it can be up to 30% according to engine size

As others have mentioned, VRT is the killer to this enterprise.

UK residents permanently moving to Ireland can claim exemption from VRT on a private car, but quite a lot of documentation must be produced beforehand (evidence of use in the UK, employment status in Ireland etc.).

Nice idea, but they've found a way of knobbling it!

And we comlain about the government in UK collecting 17.5% in tax from us?

Where as in Ireland it is Vat 21% plus VRT of 23%-30% making the car about 50% more expensive!
