Helping sell car. What Am I doing wrong? - bazza1603
Hi,

I am trying to sell a Peugeot 206 without much luck. I cant even get time wasters..... Tried Ebay, Autotrader and local rag for 2-3 weeks.

I have been offered £4700 Part ex, but thats on the low side due to the discount I got from my new motor.

Its Peugeot 206 Estate Sw 1.4 S
Moonstone Metallic
1400 Petrol
20600 Miles
Multilock and Peugeot mats
FSH. 1 year Peugeot warranty left
Tax til Decemeber.

I am currently advertising at £5495 ONO.

Do you think a Pug dealer would buy it?

Best regards

Baz

I would suggest, if you want to sell on eBay, keeping the starting price low(ish) to attract bidders. It works, believe me. Though you probably won't get the same price as you would if you kept advertising it privately, probably nearer trade price.

btw it's a 2004 model for those who don't want to click on the link :-)

Also, get rid of the gearstick lock, sun shield, box of tissues, Winnie the Pooh, and anything else which "personalises" the car before you take the photos, as this can be off-putting. It looks a nice tidy car though, hope you get someone interested soon.

I suspect your car is overprice I'm afraid. A colleague has just bought a 53 plate 206, similar mileage and same engine as yours. He only paid £3750.
Helping sell car. What Am I doing wrong? - Armitage Shanks {p}
It is either not in demand or the price is wrong. Writing "The car drives excellant " is a rather laddish phrase and the spelling doesn't inspire confidence either. It will sell for what it is worth and it may take you some time and effort to establish just what that price is - good luck!

206 & Focus are THE favourite searches on Autotrader website.But as yours is the estate, it'll be a bit more of a specialist market.

A quick check on Auctionview, to get an idea of £$£$ resulted in none available, so can't even guess real life prices, sorry.

The Pug dealer MIGHT be interested, otherwise why not re-work your 'cost to change' figures, rather than just the discounted new car amount - possibly save a lot of messing about & having 2 cars at once!

Doesn't look too overpriced. Maybe it is just a car not particularly in demand at the moment, sometimes cars take a few weeks to sell.

Whilst auctionview doesn't list any SW's their main competitor does and shows a 2004/54 206SW 1.4S with 16k fetching 5800 which is bang on CAP price. A 2004/04 with 11k fetched 5250 which is 500 below CAP guide. As a general guide 206SW's are fetching 94% of CAP Clean price currently at auction.

Price is right, very close to Glass' part exchange value. I think it's just down to unpopularity of the model, bad reliability records, low trim level and weak engine, even if it's technically worth close to £6k.

Hi,

Thanks everyone. I have changed the auction a bit... Hopefully I will get rid of it soon.

I am just worried as I have not even had a time waster on the phone!!! Just people who have guaranteed buyers for my car

regards

Barry

"I have changed the auction a bit..."

Sorry, but it's not an auction. What you have is a small ad on ebay. As mfarrow has already pointed out, lower the starting price and create some interest. I'd also beef up the description. The photos are good though.

Hi,

Just had someone out who saw the ad on Ebay. Likes the car but wants to look at one more. Fingers crossed....

I automatically don't look at ebay cars where the starting price is within 50% of its likely selling price. I reckon - correct or not - that the seller has unrealistic price expectations. I suspect others may do the same.

I agree with you madf.

This saves a lot of time wasting by all concerned.

No offence, but the OP who mentions the wording / spelling / grammar of the ad has a point. Below with corrections made, and I've probably missed a few:

Peugeot 206 SW S 1400 Petrol 5 Door Estate in Moonstone Metallic Silver/Blue

Hello. You're bidding on my wife's car that is for sale due to her purchase of a new car.

We are the second owners and have owned the car since Jan 2005. We bought it from a Peugeot dealer, paying cash so there's no oustanding finance. The car is HPI clear.

This is a sporty looking 5 door estate car, but with very low running costs. It returns 40 miles per gallon around town and is in excellent condition. Servicing is every 20000 miles or 2 years.

The car has covered just under 20700 miles since new and is only 24 months old, as it was new in June 2004. This car has a full Peugeot service history and is still under Peugeot warranty until it is 3 years old. The warranty can be extended for around £250. There are no faults, and the car has been 100 percent reliable since we have owned it.

Spec list is:-

Power assisted steering
Air conditioning
MultiLock GearStick fitted, which cost £160
Electric front windows
Remote central locking.
Black rear window
Rear spoiler
Luggage cover and nets
CD player and radio with steering column mounted controls
ABS
Driver's airbag.
Passenger's airbag - can be turned off for rear facing child seats
Peugeot mats
Electric colour coded door mirrors
Split rear opening station wagon tailgate

Faults

A few very minor scatches. Nothing you would notice unless you looked hard for them.
Nothing else!

I require a £250 non refundable deposit and full payment by the 12 June.

Viewing is very welcome at a weekend or evening. Please ring me on 0777 5511007

I have this car advertised elsewhere, therefore I reserve the right to finish this auction early.

I will consider sensible offers. Be quick, otherwise it gets part exchanged!

well, he has put it on ebay again with new "typos" that need correcting. also some customer-friendly language might help.

I think we have given this chap all the help we can! I looked at his revised 'auction' and I ran out of fingers on 2 hands, counting spelling mistakes, punctuation errors and typos!

starting price is within 50% of its likely selling price

>>

sorry, i don't follow your thinking there.
are you saying that if you think a car is worth £2000, you should start it off at below £1000?
i.e. you expect a car to sell at more than twice the starting the price?
otherwise you won't even look at the ad?

"What am I doing wrong"

The obvious answer "you are asking far too much for it"

Its about a grand too much.
Helping sell car. What Am I doing wrong? - local yokel
While Ebay is not a true auction in the legal sense, it appears to be one to the buyer. Thus it makes sense to set the starting price low and let the bidders run the price up. In theory everything will find its market value. The theory is not quite correct in Ebay's case, however. That said, there have been reports of cars, particularly cheapies, achieving more than the seller was hoping for. I doubt that would be the case for this 206, however.

According to this page: search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZbazza1603

He's selling two! one on a buy it now at £5,695 and the other buy it now at £5,495. He's so confident of his pricing he's gone and bought an identical one, and offering that at an inflated price as well!
Helping sell car. What Am I doing wrong? - Armitage Shanks {p}
He has 2 auctions but the higher priced one says "Don't bid on this - I have started another". Can't write, can't spell, can't punctuate, asks for advice he doesn't take and doesn't know how to use e bay! A loser!

Thank you.... I have been trying to make a difference to my ad, hence a lot of amendments last night. I know my spelling is a weakness and have tried to correct it the best I can. I will correct the photos. I took the stuff out of the car yesterday, but it was too dark to take photos of a decent quality.

I appreciate peoples time

Never mind the spellings, grammar, photos bazza!

The most critical thing is to start the auction off at a reasonable price, which is nowhere near £5,700

bazz1603 - i sympathise with you, and i can see that you are now taking on the suggestions made. i see that you have now corrected most of the errors. just a few final touches:

"your" = you are

"wifes" = wife's

"I bet the garage with stick her straight back on the forecourt as the condition is that good" = in my opinion, the car is in showroom sale condition.

"excellant" = excellent

"Be Quick otherwise it gets Part exchanged" = don't bother bidding as it does not matter to you.

finally, are you sure about the 40mpg around "town" claim for a petrol estate car. if that is the case, then ok.

p.s. if you want to improve your spelling, you can have some fun learning at www.misspelled.com/
