It has done 230000 miles without a change in tensioner cam belt pulley. Current cam belt has done 63000 miles, same clutch and exhaust, wheel bearings and shockers and many other vital parts including gearbox have not been replaced since new. Just thought it might be of interest.

XUD had a very simple and strong cambelt tensioning system. However, as the car gets older it may be worth changing things a bit more often, a belt snap at this age and mileage will mean only one thing - a trip to the sky.

Ok so long as you are happy with something that gathers momentum rather than accelerate.

I think the official cambelt change frequency is 72k. When I did mine at 60k it was noticeably slack. Straightforward job.

I did have it snap soon after I bought it. 6 valves, camshaft, camshaft bearings and the vacuum pump broken

The 309 1.9D may not be the fastest car in the world but compared with a 1.8D Escort and a 1.7D Astra of similar age, both of which I've driven in the past, I can honestly say that the 309 would leave both of these standing. My old 309D would get to 60mph in around 15 seconds compared with what seems like an eternity for the Escort and Astra diesels. Not too many years ago, the XUDs were among the most refined of all diesel engines in passenger cars and made the old Ford diesels sound and drive like tractors. The XUD is also a pretty tough old lump which should go on and on, with the main weakness on these engines being head gaskets.

This was the first diesel engined car I ever drove that I thought stood any comparison to a petrol engined car.

No slower in the real world than the smaller petrol engined 309's, great handling, and astonishingly refined compared to the diesels around at the time. I agree it took the Escort and Astra of the time apart in every way except maybe interior quality.

Do you mind! This motor is well nippy. I'm replacing it with an ZX and on test drive the ZX is slower, must be heavier. If I could have found another 309 low mileage I would have got one.

Thats impressive that many of the components are still origional. Are the alternator, starter, and water pump origional components? and if not at what milages were these replaced at?

Mine is only a baby at 185k, but starter, clutch, all suspension & shockers are original

The alternator was replaced around 90000 the current one is 140000, same starter motor though. The roll bushes bushes have been replaced, those damn speed bumps. One drive shaft replaced. the origial water pump did about 120000 and the rad went as well. But thats about it, no rust except in the front of the bonnet. Of course CV boots have been changed along with track rod ends. Oh! oringinal head gasket. It is over due for a cam belt change with full kit including water pump as the water pump could fail at any time now. Third gear has to be teased in so I think its at the stage where it is not worth spending on it now.

And all interior electrics are working, never been touched including heater fan, windows and central locking.
