1 How much time is wasted sitting at traffic lights on red, waiting to turn left, with absoloutely nothing going.By allowing movement it will stop pollution and wasting time, it's worked well in the U.S for decades.
2 Traffic lights, for MOST industial sites, turned off at weekend.
3 H.g.v lorries having a disc on their back with approx weight carrying at any one time, so a driver knows his 5ton load, should be able to overtake a 32 ton lorry whilst going up hill, to avoid long tail backs.
4 At scenes of accidents, a camera set up, on the other carriageway to prevent rubber neckers, causing unessary tailbacks, and frequently more collisions.
5 BANNING CARAVANS during day light hours!!

Nice idea, the Tories are proposing it as well. Probably not possible everywhere though

Or on flashing amber as they do in Europe

In California you used to be able to turn right through a red light 'if it was safe to do so'. I don't see what's wrong with the arrangement myself, but it puts the onus on the driver to be careful and so probably won't be allowed here.

They think we're morons, and enough of us are to make it difficult to argue.

I have to disagree, PU. Remembering a hairy moment I think caravans should only be out when you can see them, whether their lights are working or not.

Does not take account of power/weight ratio though - my 7.5 tonner will cruise easily, loaded, at 70, but is defeated by modest hills to 50 or less that a 56mph limited outfit can take without slowing.

I'd love to be able to turn left on a red light. However, I believe there would be huge problems with pedestrians. Too many people give little thought to pedestrians when turning corners even though the walkers usually have priority.

And to be fair Aretas, a lot of pedestrians behave as if they always had right of way, show no courtesy themselves and don't acknowledge any shown by anyone else. If anything they're worse than drivers, and that's saying something.

Turning left on a red light might work in the US, it would be a disaster here. There are too many agressive drivers who would simply barge their way into the crossing traffic flow, would ignore pedestrians and cyclists and use the pavement to get round cars who had decided to wait.

I would not like to see caravans banned. Instead, each day between April and September one caravan at a predetermined location should be stopped by the police, and the driver shot dead by the side of the road. It would not infringe the freedom to tow a caravan, there would only be a small chance of being one of the unlucky ones, but it would sure make the blighters think...

Or there should be teams patrolling Caravan club sites with the power to force caravanners to write 5,000 word essays explaining why they didn't just book into a hotel or b&b. Those without good reasons or refusing to participate should be forced to spend the winter in their caravans. In Antarctica.

The way it works in the US is the driver should treat it same as we do a 'Stop'. In practice they get treated more like Give Ways, but outside of towns, both here and in the US, you get very few pedestrians anyway.
It even seems to work well in New York - drivers waiting until the side streets are clear to turn into.

Fair enough but it MIGHT give some assistance to many drivers, who hopefully, sometimes will use their greater knowledge of their loads and vehicles to do the correct thing!!
Re the caravans, the best thing I saw on "Top Gear" was when they used a catapault to fire old cars into a quarry with the hope of demolishing a caravan. Prehaps they should have tried a slightly different strategy on the M5 in the summer months using bazookas to test out the military's skills.

6. Lorries, HGVs, commerical vehicles above 5 tonnes, agricultural specialised machinery and vehicles with factory limited speed to 50mph banned from roads between
8:30 and 10:30 and between 17:00 and 19:00 hours.

"5,000 word essays explaining why they didn't just book into a hotel or b&b."
Try taking your two kids to Greece for 6 weeks and flying there and staying in hotels and B&Bs. Caravan is slightly cheaper and also enables them to experience the joys of many of the countries of Europe. Caravans are no slower than HGVs and a properly driven and loaded van should be able to proceed at the legal limit and not cause hold-ups. The experiment of limiting 'vans to the inside lane on the M5 produced no discernable improvement in traffic flows - 'vans were not the cause of congestion etc.
Tell you what, here's an idea to produce easier motoring - ban all company cars, especially those which are not necessary for the driver to perform his actual job and are just a "perk". Only allow people on the road if they have purchased, or are in the process of purchasing their car via HP, loan etc? Or, compelling company cars to be emblazoned with the name of the company that actually owns the car and banning them from using roads during peak hours (7am to 10 am, 4pm to 7 pm and all day Saturday and Sunday) Shoot anyone disobeying this edict - machine gun posts will be set up on strategic road bridges)
Also, as in France, Germany etc
1)have "no trucks overtaking" restrictions on uphill gradients of motorways.
2)No trucks on motorways at weekends (unless perishable goods)
3) provide "crawler lanes" on uphill sections of motorways which become the inside lane over the crest (rather than forcing trucks to merge back into the inside lane as on M25 - so the trucks don't use the crawler lane)

Children living within half a mile of school to be walked there rather than driven (in the 4x4?)

My school was nearly two miles away and I had to!
