I notice in the JD Power survey that the Polo, Golf and Passat beat the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo, in their respective groups.
Will this quieten the many VW knockers on this forum?
I think not.

As I live with and drive a pile of badly made unreliable VW rubbish, it wont quieten this one down.

The trouble is that people expect VWs to go on twice as long without faults than say Fords and Vauxhalls due to unreasonable expectations of their quality etc. This is what the VW knockers dwell on I think.
I rmember hunting for a used VW Golf some years ago, and I have to say that there was a very common theme amongst the cars I saw of buying into the VW quality thing, but then never maintaining it afterwards, and these same people are probably the ones who moan when it goes wrong !

I think a lot of it is down to personal experience too. VW could all of a sudden leap to top spot in this JD Power thing and I still wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.I so achingly want a Golf GTi but three crap Golfs tells my head to rule my heart and not touch one. They really don't deserve £21000 of my hard earned wonga after previous experiences.
Therefore, JD Power is great for those wanting to try a new make and who need a guide to what's generally reliable and what's not but useless to the manufacturers who've already burnt their bridges with customers like me.By the way I bought into the VW "quality thing" and was let down big style by rubbish quality control, pathetic electrics and useless dealers. I paid top money for the cars and had them all serviced by VW dealers so don't accuse us of not caring for the cars. They are simply not worth the premium. To me it's fairly obvious - if you charge top prices it is reasonable for people to expect more. This probably explains why VW never do as well as Skodas when they are all similar cars.

Hi,
In the past I loved VW's especially Early Jettas and Golfs. They just never went wrong.
In 2001 we bought 4 x Polos diesels for our company cars. Electrics were terrible. Nearly all electric windows and Central locking had failed several times. One car couldnot be driven at more than 50mph as it was all over the road, and VW just couldnot fix it. The others suffered steering rack problems and needed replacing more than once. Cars would come back with the same fault time after time. You needed to book for hire cars at least 4 weeks ahead. We sold them at 3 years old with 80k on the clock. Engine wise they couldnot be knocked at all.
In 2004 we bought 3 x Fiesta 1.4 TDCi. Cars are upto 60k in less than 2 years and I have had one problem in total with a diesel primer pump failing after a service.
I agree that Ford dealers are terrible, but I pay nearly half VWs price for servicing.
I would never consider to buy a private VW for this reason.
Regards
Baz

Well all I can say is the following from personal experience:-
I've had 2 x Passats with a total of about 100,000 miles with no significant faults. We had a Mk 3 1.4 Golf (which admittedly was a bit of a barge) but no trouble with this either. I have an Audi A4 now 33K miles, no problems at all so far. My father is on his second Passat (the first one lasted 9 years with no problems other than routine servicing, and was also fault-free when he sold it).
Compared to our experience of other cars eg Renault, Citroen etc, this is a brilliant record.

"Well all I can say is the following from personal experience"
Just another example of people believing what they want to. A similar argument runs on this forum between those who will 'never touch another French car', and those (like me) who have run Peugeots for twenty years and haven't had a duff one. I suppose it is just luck - if you get a really poor car (Friday afternoon again) it is easy to tar them all with the same brush.
Having said that, I don't like the 206 or the 307. My 306 has to last a long time ....

I've just lost a Vauxhall and gained a VW, I was never convinced by the VW quality thing since my Father bought got a brand new 1995 Passat as a company car 11 years ago during the time they highly advertised the quality and lack of rattles and squeaks. It was the worst quality car he has ever head, and the dealers were the worst, I decided then I would never own a VW. Well, I bought a VW, it is FAR lower in quality than my Vauxhall, there is no question, it's made of cheap? and nasty materials which are't properly finished off, thinner glass and mouldings, if you bang the door cards with your elbow they make a noise and give way a few mm, if you go over a speed hump the hole car makes a thump sound, not from anywhere in particular just everything makes a small protest noise that add up to a chorus. The headrest resonates at idel unless I bang my head against it. The whole VW thing is like the emporer's new clothes. There is also a lot of wind and tyre noise at high speeds from underinsulated wheel arches. The only reason I bought was I was desperate for a used automatic diesel and hoped they'd changed since the 1990s.
What's the worst is they command a premium price, but are as I amagine far eastern tat to be.
Hopefully I will get used to it.

I agree with bazaa. The engines on my Golfs were all fine, no problem at all. It was always the electrics and ancillaries. Mk 3 had air con compressor problems. Ist Mk4 ran up 17 faults, all of which were electrical or build quality related and 2nd Mk4 had repeated wiper motor failures so I got shut before it killed me. The last time it went was in pouring rain in the fast lane of the M1 on a Friday afternoon. I thank God to this day I'm still here having managed to get to the hard shoulder safely (bearing in mind you have about 2 or 3 seconds before your windscreen is obliterated with rain). To say I pood myself is an understatement and I stood there in the pouring rain waiting for VW emergenct for the 3rd time cursing and thinking how soon I could get rid before the motor went again. Suffice to say it was never the motor it was somewhere in the electrics but the dealer never wanted to entertain that as a possible solution. I just hope the poor mug who bought this car is still alive because I can guarentee it wasn't fixed.
Pathetic.

Go and tell that to all those 'with it' young studs on the www.uk-mkivs.net website forums and see what abuse you get back!

If I was buying a new car, id have a Subaru every time. My father had an early Impreza Turbo, before they became popular, and his car had one fault - the bracket holding the dealerfit aircon unit worked loose and a belt started cutting into the cambelt cover.
When we phoned the dealer, they were totally horrified and collected the car from 30 miles away within two hours and left us a car.
We got the car back in two days with a bunch of flowers for my mum and a free service for my dad.
Now thats the kind of service that makes me want one and aside from that dealer related issue, the car was thrashed to 50k in two years but never missed a beat and the dealer continued their superb customer care.
I know where id spend £21,000 and it wouldnt be at a VW dealer!
Subaru deserve their high JD power positons and beating Ford and Vauxhall is hardly an acheivement for VW, it just means they are better than awful!
The easiest way to discover what cars are the best, is see what motor traders spend their money on - 99% of traders are the fussiest car buyers on the planet.
