My bro is seriously thinking about one. We've got nice dealers over here, 20% off list price. Concerned about the reliability, though, as his current Avensis is just superb. We're talking MY' 06, a Z22 YH 155 BHP engine + 5 speed auto Active Select.
Isn't it a Japanese JATCO unit ? What about its reliability ?
Z22 YH is powered by a direct injection - any problems with that ?

Same engine and gearbox as fitted to my 2004 Vectra. All ok so far in it's 2½ years of life.
There were some concerns over the lack of lubrication to the camchain, but providing the oil is changed regularly, then it *should* be ok.
Aprilia might be able to advise some more on the gearbox.

And what about the MPG figures ?

24 to 27 around town.
33 to 35 on a long run.
Heavy right foot though.

Loved my Vectra 04 2.2i when I first got it.
I currently get 30 to the gallon on a run - when it was newer I got around 35. Don't think my driving style has changed that much.
Shortly afterwards the problems started....
2 new central locking systems for the back doors.
New control for the wipers after they refused to reset.
New computer after the cruise control would not work.
It died just in to the new year due to a fuel delivery problem and took 2 weeks to fix with no curtesy car.
Oh and the wipers are playing up again.
I previously had an Avensis (1.8vvti last version) and it never went wrong.
I will say that the Vectra looks better imho and is a nicer drive.

I really hope so...

GM do all their own auto's and they're pretty good. These days they have much input from Aisan-Warner (a Japanese company which is actually part of the Toyota 'Keiretsu'). Its good transmission - 5-speed on this vintage IIRC, with manual override (a dual gate 'tiptronic' type arrangement with gear display on the instrument panel).
I wouldn't worry too much about the transmission (so long as not used for towing) - the rest of the car's electrics could be a bit of a minefield though, they don't have a terrific reputation for reliability. The 1.9 turbo-Diesel auto is an interesting beast to drive. Terrific 'pull' from 2000-4000 rpm and cruises at 70mph at idle rpm!! Snag is that initial pull away at junctions is very sluggish and you can't keep them out of the repair workshop. 2.2i is not a bad engine IMHO, although the early ones certainly broke their timing chains.

Sorry, just noticed you're thinking of brand new. I think they might have gone to 6-speed auto on latest production. Basically the same 'box though.

Aprilia: Superb source of info as always, thanks a lot !

Isn't that only on the diesel models?
|
Yes, it's only on the diesels + they come directly from FIAT.

The six-speed could potentially be fitted to most of the Vectra line-up (I believe the casing is the same as the five-speed). AFAIK the factory currently fits them to the V6 petrol and Diesel and the 150PS 1.9 Diesel. I've driven the latter a fair bit and it is just ticking over at 70mph. The snag with this engine is hesitation when pulling away from junctions - there is an initial flat-spot and then a rush of acceleration as the revs build up. Spoils it a bit for me..
