Can anyone tell me if the roadworks are still in place on the M1 near the junction with the M25?
I am travelling to Nottinghamshire tomorrow (Friday) is it better to go M25 to J21 and then M1 or would M25 - M40 - A43 - M1 be better?
As always, I will grateful for your advice.
PS We are planning to leave mid-morning.

Planned completion Autumn 2008 mate.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS UNLESS EXTREME HOURS (say 2-4am).
M25-M40-A43-M1
better in nearly every case.

Which reminds me.... ;-)
Aylesbury to Stansted airport
Next Monday (5th June)
Check in 11:30am
Normal departure time os 10:00am to give 60 minutes for the journey (normally exactly so) plus 15 for bus transfer and another 15 in reserve.
I have done this journey a zillion times over the past nine years, but the chauffeur who brought me back from Heathrow on Wednesday warned " What a bleedin' nightmare on the M25 between J23 South Mimms (A1M) and J25 Waltham Cross (A1081). The carriageway is down to two lanes clockwise and the traffic stacked up all day long. I got caught in it last week, and I was driving in the small hours."
So, just how bad should I expect it to be?
I ask as the alternative route I've used in the past (A41 from Aylesbury to Hemel, then M1-M10-A414-M11 to Stansted) is only worth considering if my normal route of A41-M25-M11 is seriously choked.

M40-A43 is a very long way round to get from M1 jcn 6-15, but worth it if, like me, you'd rather be moving than not.
Doing both routes very regularly, I would suggest that the time for each route would be similar.
Of course every hour earlier or later you travel before/after 4pm/7pm will make the journey MUCH nicer.

Having just remembered that i do this journey from Watford....
...ignore my previous post if you are travelling from south of Slough, and go M40/A43

SJB, I drove clockwise around the top of the M25 at around 11pm last night and the other way at about 9pm on Wednesday. Traffic was moving OK on each occasion BUT could see how this would be very different at peak times. I would add 60 mins to your contingency time.
Not sure what they're doing. Main area seems to be the tunnel after the A10 junction.

Having just travelled on the M25 to/from the M11 junction, I have have to express my heart felt sympathy with anyone who is forced to use this stretch every day. There is a several mile stretch of 'Specs' enforced 40mph limit and lane restrictions. I did it on Sunday mid-morning, but even thinking about what it is like in rush hour must be classed as pornographic ! As the roadworks are planned to be in place till XMAS 2007, I think it would probably be worth finding another job to avoid this mayhem.
Why do roadworks take so long in the UK ? Or is it a government master-plan to dissuade us from driving !

Those roadworks are crazy - I regularly drive between York and London via M25/M1 and they cause so many hold ups. Even leaving at night doesn't solve it - I was passing through on Friday morning at 2am it still took half an hour to get from j10 to the M25.
