Volvo S0 T5 SE - BB
Hi,

Just p/x my 95 Golf VR6 for a 2001 S60 T5 SE. Picking it up next Thursday :)

May be a bit late now, but any opinions on the T5? Have read HJ's roadtest and cbc but just wondering if anyone has any ownership tips or comments?

Thanks in advance

I have never owned one myself but colleague has a S60 T5. He swears by it and owns 2 other Volvo V70 T5's. I have travelled in his and it is very rapid and smooth. Ergonomically it is excellent and seats are also good. He racks up huge mileages in his Volvos as well.
Very popular chase car in the police force and they do not choose their cars lightly.
IMO you have chosen well BB (providing you have satisfied yourself on Volvo service history and authentic mileage etc.)

Thanks for that. I bought it from a dealer with full Volvo history and one year warranty. I had never really considered one before, but just called in at the dealer when I saw one advertised on autotrader.

I was looking to buy an X Type or IS200, but the T5 spec was excellent and the performance was something else! I bought it straight away.

Has your colleague had any problems with it? Does he have any additional tips seeing as he loves his T5's?

He has never mentioned any problems to me but I will ask him tomorrow and come back to you.
He does know some mechanics that service these for the police force so he may have some tips.
I also now remember my uncle who drives for an up-market taxi service and they have to have up-market motors - he buys V70's and racks up 200K before selling them - he has never had any problems.
I will come back to you on Thu.

BB, get yourself accquainted with www.volvoclub.org.uk/forum/index.php

Full of useful Volvo chaps and a good discussion forum.

The S60 is a cracking motor, I had a 2.0T which was swift enough (T5 should be mind blowing!), the only thing I didn't like was the very poor turning circle, but I got used to it and it won't stop me recommending the car on the whole.

BB - I spoke to the guy today and so far he has had no problems in 75K miles of motoring.
He bought it with about 20K on the clock and has suggested that if there was anything wrong it must have been sorted out before he bought it because it has been utterly reliable.
He has no plans to change in the near future because he is delighted with it and continues to service it as HJ would.
He especially likes the look on the face of BMW 330 & 530 drivers as he puts the 250 bhp to good use - they do look surprised at how a very modest looking car suddenly delivers a turn of speed that leaves them trailing.
From what I can gather you have bought yourself a very good car.
Enjoy.

Thanks for the comments guys. Your words have backed up my thoughts exactly. I have now registered on the volvo forum and departed from the VR6 one. (Always sad to leave a good forum, but the Volvo forum looks well used.)

It is a very modest looking car, one that barely gets a second glance from most. I was very close to buying a Lexus IS200, but when I realised I could spend less on a newer, more powerful car it was a no-brainer to me.

I didn't get a insurance quote until today, but at only £430 for fully comp (3,000 mile limit) 31 yr old engineer, I shouldn't have been worried.

I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. Its still a week till I can get my hands on it. Next thing to figure out is whether the grille or the roof is the best place for the flashing blue lights ;)

You have insured it for only 3000 miles a year?

Yep,
Weekend car (I have a diesel for the commuter run) and out the country for a while each year. Also use SWMBO Honda Civic diesel as it is company car.

S60 will be kept for a long long time!!!

Just out of interest how much did it affect your quote by reducing mileage below 12k?

I'm highly envious BB!

Great car - I'm sure you'll have lots of fun driving it.

Cheers chaps.

I didn't get a quote for 10,000 miles per annum, but it reduced my VR6 insurance by about £150 a couple of years ago and I have kept it the same every year since.

To be honest, how would the insurance company find out if I did more mileage? They can't can they?

Only 6 more days to go :)
