Had my car MOT'd last week. They charged me £44.
I've only just realised but this is the full fee, bar 15p! I've never been charged the full fee before, and I always go to the same place.
It's also the first time I've ever had to book an MOT in my life. For about 20 minutes of the test my car was just sitting there in the garage, while the testers looked at another car. Isn't the computerised MOT wonderful! The car has to be logged into the VOSA computer for 45 minutes, and mustn't leave the testing centre before this time.
However, as I understand it, during this time the tester(s) can do virtually anything they want to, make telephone calls, have a tea break, go for a walk, almost anything at all, in fact. All that has to happen is that the car must be logged in for 45 minutes.
Will have to think about it next year, perhaps it's time to shop around.

Well it certainly wasn't the case when my car was tested at a local independent garage - the tester was on the go the whole time (I always watch my car being tested from start to finish) and conducted the test in a very professional manner.
I'd been going to a National outlet because of its half-price tests for two or three years but, as it temporarily didn't have a tester on its staff, used the local garage because it had done some MOTs on my earlier VWs.

The test was always reckoned to take around 40-45mins. I think with the new system VOSA are trying to clamp down on the lads who do a test in 20 minutes - and rattle through loads in a day. Or those who are a favourite haunt of local trader mate who sends all his cars there for a 5 minute test. Its not common, but it does happen and the 45 minute timer removes some of the incentive.

My local Indy charges £44 for an MoT but if you have a service, pre MoT check before the MoT he knocks £10 off the service - he does not reduce the MoT cost.
Reason MoT is not vatable, Service is so Gordon gets £1.75 less - not a lot in the day but enough to feel you have got something back out of Gordon.

I pay £35 for MoT including free retest within 7 days, at Newbold MoT Centre in Chesterfield (was £25 before the computerised system). They are firm but fair, do tests only not repair work, so I can be sure they are not failing things to make work for themselves.

I have just called 12 garages in the area (midlands) and all charge exactly £40 and already follow the new rules tinyurl.com/krhoe due to start in august

Thanks guys. Thought I was about to pay too much at £40 but TBH I'll stay with the same place I've used the past 7 years. At least I know they don't 'find' work. A tenner saved at an unknown could well end up costing £££s in work.
Hopefully their MoT fee might level off in the future. (Or, more likely, the competition will level up).
