BMW R1150RT should I buy one? - shoei
Following on from my "BMW f800ST should I buy one" thread I visited the BMW dealer yesterday looked at the 800 and do not like it, so I am now looking for a 2004 silver 1150 RT. Has anybody got any comments on this bike what to look for does and don`t etc. Thanks

Depends on the price. If it means paying a bit more for a 1200 go for it. Honeymoon period is over on my 1200 - it is the "biz" see my write up within the forum somewhere. The 1200 is 66 lbs lighter, (but can still be a handful). I have done more bike mileage in the last three weeks than I did in the previous twelve months. No complaints. I've read countless roadtests on the 1150 and the 1200, and whether tested by sportsbike or cruiser journalists I don't think I have ever heard a bad word about either.

I sat on an 1150 at a show once, and it is like sitting in the upstairs front seats on a bus. They look like they could never work but seemingly they do, and brilliantly.

You may want to consider a pre-VTEC VFR800. Mint examples of the FiY can be picked up for around 3k, and there's still not a great deal of competition to this refined allrounder.

The VTEC glitches have proved complex for Honda to resolve; even the revamped 06 model isn't right yet....

Why didn't you like the 800 ?
If I remember, you don't want something with a chain - so the RT would be an obvious choice.
You seem determined to buy a BMW of some sorts, and I'm sure you can find a BMW dealer who will let you try various models to find one that suits.
If you don't like the boxer twins, you could look for the K1200RS
with its in-line engine - and still has shaft drive.

The first thing you should look for is can I handle something that size? Can I live with that big fairing? Do my feet reach the ground comfortably? Seat may be adjustable or replaceable with a lower one.
If so get a test ride from your friendly BMW dealer.

Found a nice RT 20,000k, silver, 2004 model, tyres as new, fsh, mint condition. £6900 with a free service and top box thrown in. Good deal? What should I look for on test ride? and anything else?

No idea on price- check a price guide. If from a main dealer you may have the assurance of some warranty and goodwill by paying a bit extra.
I find Rainbow, Rotherham, an excellent dealer and many others get praise.
Apart from checking on my comments above, also assess whether you can live with the powered/linked brakes (if fitted)I think they are superb but some may find them odd.
