I want to take out breakdown cover for when I go abroad at the end of May, but all the companies require me to have a credit card to gain a hire car if needed, does any BR know of any company that doesn't reqire me to have a credit card? (I've never had nor desire a credit card!)

SFAIK there is no major hire car company anywhere which will give you a car without a deposit/security payment taken from a credit card. Without trying to change the habits of your lifetime I have to say that I think you might find one card useful. For the sole purpose of getting commission free cash and credit card sales abroad I have a card issued by N-Wide Bldg Soc. It costs nothing to have, it saves one either a rubbish exchange rate on foreign purchases and/or a 2.75% commission on foreign transactions. (No connection, other than as a satisfied customer!) You can, perhaps, leave a cash deposit, likely to be about 800 euros or £500. That used to be the position but I am sure it will have changed by now.

But it's leaving it a bit late to have a credit card application approved and sealed by the end of this month.

I would ask your bank if they provide breakdown cover. My own the HSBC give breakdown cover along with other benefits in one of their schemes. All normal UK add-ons such as accomodation, recovery and hire car.
I would think all banks provide a similar scheme.
They say regarding the hire car 'If Green Flag arrange a hire caryou will have to keep to the terms and conditions of the hire company, and pay any deposit the hire company asks for'.
