Fancy a ChipsAway Franchise? There is one for sale on Ebay.
Sole Franchisee in Cornwall. Training will have to be taken. Reason for sale ill-health.
3 bids so far, current top bid is £1.24 - that's right one pound twentyfour pence!
|
Poor s*d! This has cost him £40,000 to date. The buyer will have to pay for his own training (I guess)and the outgoings are £200 a month franchise fee and £300 a month for the van and you are tied in for another 18 months. The seller says that he was grossing £25,000 in his first year and getting £800-900 week when the business was developed. I don't think it is going to sell for much!
|
£25,000 a year is only £500 a week so his figures dont stack, sounds like he is trying to sell his lease and walk away, looks like he should have taken ill health protection to me,as no one will take on an unknown franchise with out proven figures ,would they?and cornwall not the ideal chips away location i wouldnt have thought?

I know we like to frequently complain about how much things cost, but one of these guys (own business, not ChipsAway) came to my house and took out and repainted a little dent on the bonnet and repaired 2 heavy scuffs on the rear bumper, all for £80. He was at it for 3 hrs, so perhaps could have fitted another similar job in that day but not much else.
With supplying all the materials, his van, travelling time, quiet time etc etc, it's hard to imagine they're making much money.
|
The ones that'll do OK in this game, are the guys that can get 'in' with a few traders/garages.
They can get 3 or 4 jobs on the go at once, in the same location & make it more cost effective for all. Saves sending the vehicle out to a painter, needing to re-clean it, having it off sale & the Mr Fixit can save his travel time & diesel.
When you see how many are on the go, at once, in some of the big auction centres, doing 'smart repairs' before the fleets sell on,it must work for some of them!!

I've just had a look and it's up to £1550 now.
Cornwall is a fairly affluent area so supply of work could well be OK. Lack of other operators in area could also be an advantage.

Don't live in Cornwall but get the impression its a fairly poor area.

I also thought Cornwall had one of the lowest average wages in england.

Indeed it does - 155 out of 157 if I'm reading the data linked here correctly:-

No wonder the guy is trying to get rid of the franchise!

Cornwall is one of Britains most deprived areas, but I see your point that the BMW X5 and City Bonus mob may provide a customer base to a point..

Think you've misunderstood the original post. Was £25k in the first year, but after than, when more established, went up to £800 per week.
|
£800 A week?
At £80 a pop thats 10 jobs a week. sounds about right.
48 weeks working a year thats £38k year.
Take you fixed costs out of that - Franchise and Van, £500 month so thats £6k out of your £38k - £32k
No idea what the variable costs are say another £6k annum.
Its not a bad franchise but you could loose it after 18 months and end up with diddly.

While that's theoretically possible, I can't for the life of me imagine it actually works out like that.

It's now up to £3,350.00, which sounds like a very long way away to me.

I think its a good deal for this franchise.

Arise, Lazarus! >>
Yes indeed, I do wonder why some people join up simply to revive long dead threads?
Having seen fredosmith's other two posts in recent days since he joined, I wonder what he is on?
|
Easy mistake to make though! Done it once or twice before after using forum search.
|
I suppose we can at least assume these folks have had the wit to do a forum search before posting a new thread, even if they didn't check the date of the postings.

(((Cornwall is a fairly affluent area so supply of work could well be OK)))
Cornwall affluent! your aving a larf ... there are affluent area's such as Padstein, St. Mawes and the Helford river but apart from that it's one of the poorest area's *in Europe*.
It's also a very wet area of the UK and the population is just over Arthur million in the whole county!
I worked for Hometune mobile injun tuning for 9 years then got my own van & equip., a Franchise is a good idea as you get all the help & support to suck seed (+ training!)
Loadsa money though - for the Franchisor.
Is eBay the best place to sell a biz? I sold mine through Daltons Weekly - things have moved on a tad since then I'll wager!

Yes, and that is absolutely fine when making a genuine post.

More "witty" or perhaps half-wit at times. The pattern seems to be that they register, revive a long dead thread to make some "witty" comment, never to post on the forum again.
|
I agree with the comment that such a franchise needs 'regular' work. I had a very good job done by a Mr Dent, who did my job while I was parked in a side street outside a main-dealer where he had just done several dents.

Blimey! What a happy coincidence - he has the same surname as the sort of work that he does. What are the odds on that?
|
Actually DRBE, it was in inverted commas on his business card and as you observe was a good working title but not his real name, I think!
|
AS, I am sure - I hope - that we both had our respective tongues firmly in our respective cheeks when we posted.

Not really is the answer !!
My local Chips Away franchisee charges so much for repairs, you may as well go to a normal bodyshop. Also, I was told by another minor bodywork repairer that soon they will have to use water based paints, making on-site repairs much more difficult especially in cold weather.

My experience exactly. Futhermore, the bodyshop will probably bake the repair so presumably make it work better.

Fancy a ChipsAway franchise?
No, but this thread has given me a very unhealthy idea for my tea. :)

Fair point.

Have they not been using water-based paint, and an infra-red lamp (to speed up the process)?
