Gearbox whine - citroen xsara - skap7309
Hi i have a gearbox whine thats been developing over time now, judging by what ive read over the internet it seems to be a failing pinion bearing. The whine has started in 5th and slowly worked its way to third, with second just beginning. Ive also been told by the time it gets to first, im running on minutes rather than days.
I phoned a gearbox specialist and he thinks ive got little or no oil in my gearbox, thing is i had the clutch replaced 6 months ago so new oil would have been added? He also used the term 'overburn'? There is no oil leaking onto my driveway.
Can anyone shed light onto this for me? Thankyou

Might help if you were to mention what the car is.

On some cars removal of the gearbox to get at the clutch does not require the oil to be drained. On others draining of the oil is the first requirement, or the oil leaks out when the driveshafts are removed.

Failure to refill the gearbox is a forseeable failure.

One of my mates had a new gearbox fitted that was noisy. After a couple of weeks he checked the oil level, and found there was none in!

As Dynanmic Dave said. Make, Model, and age please

Sorry about that, its a 1999 citroen xsara {Added - DD} with 82,000 miles covered. Im fairly sure new oil was used with my clutch change but im beggining to panic now as i have to cover 1000 miles to cornwall and back at the end of the month

Recon gearboxes on these are about £600. Get a new one.

You think it had new oil !!!. You had better check it. The Diff bearing rotate at road speed and it does not know what gear you are in so that would not meet the symptoms. Regards Peter

Just had a reply on another site and someone mentions a mainshaft bearing? (louder with 'box under load)Im going to have a oil change tomorrow and see what happens but at the mo its looking like a major job. Does anyone see that if its not the oil (which was checked 6 months ago) that it could be pinion or mainshaft related and if so would a complete refurb or part replacement be better and/or cheaper?

Breakeryard.com have just quoted £233.25 for a recon box incl. VAT and delivery. Says it comes with a 60 warranty (seems a little short to me?) does that sound too cheap to be a good idea?

That's not a recon just another box off a scrap car. Regards Peter

So thats no good then?

Did they mention 60 day warranty?,thats under 2 months and not a recon box, recons are usually 1 year or at least 6 months warranty.

try elsewhere, you may pay more but as long as you have a written warranty(unless they go bust in meantime)you should be okay,IMO its not worth dealing with scrap yards as they wont always honour any warranty they give.

being price of unit I would get recon or new,Not second hand (breakers yard)too risky IMO!

You definitely have to drain the oil from these boxes to change the clutch. Failure is very unusual unless they have covered mega miles. I would definitely drain the oil (if there's any in there!) and re fill - make sure you use the proper Total 75W80 BV oil - these boxes run much better on it.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
