Fiesta Mk5 rear wiper intermittent - smokie
Daughter's Fiesta (2000, V) has a problem with the rear wiper not always working.

Although she says that sometimes a good slam of the boot cures it, I've checked there and can't see anything suspect in the connections, so I'm taking that with a pinch of salt.

Any ideas gratefully accepted...

wifes is same its a high resistance in the earthing i think but once switch has been left on for 10 seconds it works like magic so ive left it, (the cure is a smack with a hammer on the ingers i believe).

It may cure the problem, but the use of WD40 does not aid conductivity. It is an insulator.

Yes, and it'll wash away all the protective hinge grease! How about packing them with vaseline afterwards?

What a bodge. Earthing the wiper motor via the hinges! I wonder if any Japanese car maker stoops that low?

I had a Fiesta that gave lots of trouble with the same symptoms that I sold 3 years ago when it was about 6 years old. Just could not force myself to do something about it until I reached the time when I needed to sell it.

I realised the fault was due to earthing via the hinges, as described here but, at that time, I thought it was caused by my earth wire becoming broken.

Rather than have to trace the break, I drilled the bodywork and fitted a new, flexible, earth lead and all was OK.

Reading this, I have only just realised, there was no earth lead to break! ! ! !

I have had a mK 2,mk 3and Mk 4 Fiesta.
Most times it is corrosion on the brass/copper pads and fingers.
A bit of a rub down with wet'n dry and a spray with anything designed for use on battery terminals normally does the trick (ie as outlined in the link in an earlier message)
It may also be worth taking this connecting (finger /pad) block off to check the wiring connections to the block as these can corrode as well.
In bad cases the corrosion gets into the springs that keep the "fingers" pressed to the pads meaning they become erratic.
Again clean and vaseline....

I had something similar happen to my mk4.

It worked great until I greased the tailgate hinges and then it just stopped working at all.

All the wiring was fine and I sanded the contacts and all the things people are saying but it was the earthing through the hinges that was the problem.

Looking at the latch on the body I could see a plastic (I assume) anti-rattle 'sleeve' so I just cut that off.
It turns out that the tailgate doesn't rattle anyway and it provides a lovely big fat earth for everything (and I can grease my tailgate hinges all I like now and not worry about it affecting anything from now on).

All over a properly routed little earthing wire, the cheapskates.
