wifes is same its a high resistance in the earthing i think but once switch has been left on for 10 seconds it works like magic so ive left it, (the cure is a smack with a hammer on the ingers i believe).

It may cure the problem, but the use of WD40 does not aid conductivity. It is an insulator.

Yes, and it'll wash away all the protective hinge grease! How about packing them with vaseline afterwards?

What a bodge. Earthing the wiper motor via the hinges! I wonder if any Japanese car maker stoops that low?
I had a Fiesta that gave lots of trouble with the same symptoms that I sold 3 years ago when it was about 6 years old. Just could not force myself to do something about it until I reached the time when I needed to sell it.
I realised the fault was due to earthing via the hinges, as described here but, at that time, I thought it was caused by my earth wire becoming broken.
Rather than have to trace the break, I drilled the bodywork and fitted a new, flexible, earth lead and all was OK.
Reading this, I have only just realised, there was no earth lead to break! ! ! !
