Peugeot 406 aircon - Big Bad Dave
Over the past couple of weeks it?s been slowly getting hotter and hotter. It?s nearly 6 years old, I?m guessing it needs re-gassing. Will my local little Peugeot franchise be able to do this and how much will it set me back?

Cheers

Dave.

BBD you are in Poland aren't you. Wouldn't a local air con specialist be aba better bet than a makers' agent? If you were in UK I would suggest a specialist. My recent pleasant stay in Krakow suggests that it will be cheap, wherever you go!

Just had the same job done yesterday to my Mondeo.

UK cost was £49.00 + VAT

Yeah A.S. I pay about twenty pound an hour labour but I was just wondering how involved and messy it was. The thing is I trust my local Peugeot agent which counts for a lot here.

If it?s £49.00 + VAT though, wifey will be happy, I told her about £100.00. Did you go to a specialist Chaz?
Peugeot 406 aircon - Dave N
You probably need a new condensor, they rot through at the bottom corners and behind the fan.

I've said it before, so I'll say it again - cars should only lose very small amounts of gas (like 5%/year). Very very few cars ever lose enough gas through natural leakage over the lifetime of the car to severely affect the operation of the a/c. Nearly always, something breaks as the car gets older and you lose the charge.

My guess is that ?local little Peugeot franchise? would be able to re-gas the system, but nothing more. I wouldn?t go to the main dealer, either. They?re good at electronics, mechs & major things. And after 6 years, what you need is a complete check-up along with bacteria-killing-stuff (very important in Polish climate, should be done after every winter!) and new pollen filter.

Back in Warsaw I used this one very often:

www.norauto.pl/centra_w_polsce_adresy.php?id_centr...3

If you?re still working where you?ve been working recently, it?s about 5 minutes journey.

My bro paid 340 zl for all above mentioned operations, which took almost 2 hours (current shape Avensis that just went off warranty). Note that the bacteria-killing-thing is NOT just an ordinary spray that you can buy in a supermarket, stick into the vents and spray, but something more sophisticated based on stron chemistry.

V de M are you talking about the place that used to be Karman? It?s the only one I know of on Ostrobramska near Media Mart. I?ve got a major beef with Karman but if they?ve changed hands I might check it out tomorrow.

340 zl seems reasonable for all that work but you can bet as soon as I open my English mouth it?ll be double that.

Cheers though.
Peugeot 406 aircon - Vincent de Marco
Yeah, that's the place - except now everything has changed. Don't open your mouth, take your wife with you ;)

Went to a specialist in Coventry - SAC in the Spon End area.

I took it on Saturday to the place recommended in an earlier post, they did a daignostic and they re-gassed it but it?s still blowing hot air. So lots of agro, bad language and accusations of amateursim, they couldn?t even change pollen filters blah blah, any way I?m left with a car that has been re-gassed but doesn?t work.

Any more ideas? Someone at work suggested the compressor or at least an electronic clutch in the compressor. What?s this condensor thingy that Dave N was talking about?

The place I went to is like a Kwik Fit outfit that do air-conditioning as well as tyres and brakes etc, is it time to go to Peugeot?

Cheers

My local Ford dealer outsource all air-con work to a nearby specialist, which is apparently not uncommon. It makes sense to just go to the specialist directly.

Dave

Was there any gas left in it? Did they pull a vacuum in it and hold it to test the integrity of the system? If there was no gas, then it's got a leak, and shouldn't really have been regassed. If there was gas, then there is some other fault with it - when you switch the air con on, the cooling fans should start. If even this doesn't happen, then it could be a problem with the pressure switches - or all manner of other electrical maladies. Of course if it's got a leak then regassing it will just have sent the refrigerant straight out of the hole(s)....

The condenser is a small radiator where the refigerant is condensed, giving up the heat it absorbed when it was boiled off in the evaporator (which is inside the car). The condenser normally sits in front of the radiator - and is one reason why the cooling fans start when the A/C is switched on. They corrode due to being attacked by road salt - DaveN presumably has changed more than a few of these....!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Peugeot 406 aircon - Vincent de Marco
Amateursim ??? At Norauto ??? I'm shocked cause my bro could swear by them after they re-gassed his Ave. But anyway, it's their problem how to fix it isn't it ? However, if you don't want to go back to them, you can either look for another garage or take your 406 to the main dealer.

I have to say I was really impressed with Norauto, it?s a million miles better than it was when it was Karman, the re-gas was only 199 zl (34 quid) I was just annoyed with them for not finding the true fault and for not testing it afterwards.

They did an oil change for me though, I supplied the oil and they charged the princely sum of 3.45 pounds labour which I was pleased about.

V de M have you ever used Auto Wiz? They have a garage near where I work that offers the same kind of thing, maybe I?ll try them.
Peugeot 406 aircon - Big Bad Dave
In answer to Richard, I didn?t hang around while they were doing it but he explained afterwards, they sucked out 430g and they pumped in 800g of gas according to a computer printout. The cooling fans come on when A/C is switched on.

I have a printout in front of me, but of course it?s in Polish.
It?s a 12 point test, filters ventilation etc. The first 8 points are obvious and all say ok. Point 9 talks about sucking gas. Point 10 is Vacuum after repair but no value has been filled in. Point 11 is pressure after repair but no value has been filled in and same for point 12, kabin temperature after repair - no value. Guess they got bored.

So anyway if there was 430g of gas in there, maybe it?s not really leaking???

If it?s one of your "electrical maladies" maybe Peugeot should take a look???

Cheers RW, it?s starting to make some sense to me now...

I've never used Auto Wiz - an acronym for Wizards huh ;) ?
You might want to try Shell-Autoserv though:

If I were in Warsaw, I'd gladly go with you and sort it out * kick their bottoms at Norauto, but since I'm not... But when you pay - no matter if it is a deleted or Bentley's main dealer forecourt - demand, demand & demand. It's simple, really.

Peugeot 406 aircon - Big Bad Dave
Nothing?s simple for me V de M. I have to take my wife with me for things like this, but she?s house-bound cos the kids have chicken pox, my tesciova?s supposed to be helping out but she?s always too busy planning her next meal so I won?t be able to do anything till Saturday which is another week, and we?ve got scorching hot weather here and I?ve got black leather seats and it?s getting unbearable...
Peugeot 406 aircon - Dave N
430g is a reasonble amount for a 10 year old car. And with this amount it should still work pretty well also.

Unfortunately it looks like french electrical gremlins have struck. IIRC some of the early ones had fan problems, as well as wiring and a/c ecu/relay pack problems. Maybe best to try the dealer for a diagnosis.
Peugeot 406 aircon - Big Bad Dave
I think you?re right Dave although it?s not one of the first models it?s 2000.

I?ll take it to the dealer or this will go on forever. Cheers.

Almost got to the bottom of this.

Took it to a truck refrigeration specialist. It?s a broken cable or connection somewhere to the compressor - they couldn?t pin it down exactly because they don?t have the right software or laptop or something but they ran a by-pass directly to the battery so that at least I have aircon (it?s mid 30s here this week). They fitted a little household lamp switch on the grill which I have to flick once the engine is on. Plenty of jokes about how there?s nothing that a Polish man can?t repair. At one point I turned to my wife and said "these guys are gonna absolutely screw me over". As it happens, they worked on it for more than two hours yesterday while I waited and charged me the grand total of nothing - and they gave me the number of a Peugeot technician that moonlights so I can get it done properly. Top blokes.

im not sure if this will help but we had a problem with our citroen piccasso air-con which was regassed and found that we had know electrical power through to the compressor and so forth ,we eventually found the fault was the ignition switch cos it siezed up on us /after replacing the air-con worked so just an idea for u
