Are they really as unreliable as everyone makes out? I'm considering a Y-reg high mileage (108k) 1.9dci Dynamique. It's got full history and I've made a deal to straight swap it for the Focus (51, 106k, 1.6 LX). I'm wondering if it will be as unreliable as everyone tells me. And if the driving will really be that poor...

I asked a similar question with regards to the V6 models.
The general consensus is, from RF in particular is that touching anything before a 53 plate might not be the best idea.

You need to stick to 2003 onwards, by then the problems were largely sorted.
Nice cars but released before it was fully cooked IMHO. 2003 onwards with FRSH and warranty then I would say yes.

Ah ok then. I shall continue the search for Mondeo TDCi then. Damn Renault...it's such a handsome car I was all ready to forgive it's dynamic short-comings...but unreliability isn't to be forgiven (I tell myself this to avoid buying an Alfa...)

The driving is fine. A much better cruiser than the Focus. The 130 dci is a peach of an engine, punchy smooth powerful and economical (50+mpg)
However
Its a Y reg, one of the early ones. It will be a reliability hell hole. Probably the replacement (it will have been changed at 50kish) clutch master cylinderis on its way out again, the gearbox will be whiney (6th may be going)
Dont touch one of this pre mid 2003 build

It's an early 1.9 so probably the 105 bhp engine, bit underpowered for the size of car. Later 130's very nice to drive.
Much as I like Renaults, I would not buy this car.

Yes, they are unreliable
This 'bag of nails' has been discussed here many times

Just got back from test drive. It seemed ok. But that said, the steering seemed slow to react, and was surprisingly heavy. It moved though, but there was somekind of high-pitched whine the dealer tried to sell as 'turbo whine' (a feature?). Walked away.
|
The steering is a bit weighty with the low profile fat tyres onthe Dynamique,
The whine is the gearbox on its way out....

we bought a batch from a reliable lease company it nearly bankrupted me,they were all 1.9dci 2002 dynamique tourers I have never known so many faults could exist on such few cars.
|
A friend of mine had one, I think it was the 2.2 diesel. No end of trouble; turbo, electrics, gearbox etc.
The latest is that the fanbelt snapped, its remnants making a journey onto the timing belt assembly thus wrecking the engine.

I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. my company got five new 54 plate 1.9 dynamiques. 3 of the five have had to have new gearboxes after around 60k, all of them have had problems with the clutches. the tyres wear horrendously on the outside of the tyre due to poor tracking which can only be adjusted at a main dealer. You cannot replace the lightbulb without taking of the bumper - around £60 to change a light bulb !!! - never again
