Hi all
A friend of mine is telling me my W Reg Astra 1.7DTI is pinking, but I'm not so sure.
I hope this isn't a daft question, but would the sound of a diesel engine pinking sound just like a petrol engine pinking?
Would it be fair to say if a diesel suffered from incorrect ignition timing then it would have a more of an audible knock, than your usually pink.
Am I correct, or am I talking nonsense and listen to my mate?

You might hear an audible "knock" when you first start up.

Strictly speaking a diesel doesn't have ignition 'timing' SFAIK. The fuel ignites by virtue of the fact that it has been compressed to a certain extent and then burns. If the timing of the injection of the fuel was wrong I suppose that that could cause a problem, but I wouldn't call it pinking.

I always understood that the knocking noise a diesel engine makes is the unavoidable equivalent of a petrol engine pinking, because of the nature of combustion in a compression ignition engine.
If this one is making an extra sort of knocking noise it needs investigating.

I thought diesel engines were basically 'pinking' all the time..! I.e. that is how they work..

I read that higher cetane will reduce diesel knock.
Maybe this person should try Shell Extra/BP Ultimate, or add a cetane booster, just for comparison.

Don't worry about it, I have a Zafira DTI, same engine just about, when starting off, if you use to much throttle, you get dieseling, use the correct amount of throttle and this is reduced, I use any fuel treatment to reduce this effect, must be diesel fuel treatment though (sorry if it sound obvious)

I dont think there is any close relationship betwen the 1.7 and 2.0 in the Zafira, IIRC the Astra will be the Izuzu unit or the GM 8v, IIRC later 1.7's are 16v though again I dont think they are related to the 2.0 / 2.2.

Is this the same engine as the new astra 1.7..?
I hired one and it was the most unpleasant sounding diesel I have ever had. And I speak as somebody who likes the sound of most diesels..

Thanks for all the replies.
This is the 16v Isuzu engine which I think was replaced by the GM one sometime in 2001(ish). Under normal driving it sounds like your usual diesel. But if I labour the engine and try to accelerate at low speeds in to high a gear before the turbo kicks in, then I get this 'noise' at exactly the point where a petrol counterpart would start pinking.
I know this is bad practice, but i've noticed this when I have gone to accelerate in the incorrect gear and it's not been there previously in the last 3 years of ownership.
I'm probably making this too complicated to diagnose now, but the 'noise' sounds to me like a slight squeaking or squealing. Not like a fan belt however, a lot quieter than than that(although I have checked the tension).
I was even thinking about the clutch(??). It's not slipping but it has done 100k and it's the original clutch.
The plot thickens
