I wouldnt do it if I were you, because these cone type filters tend to be oil-dampened and have been blamed for premature MAF sensor failure.

I've got an oily foam type replacement panel filter in my car, done about 25k miles with it fitted and not had a MAF problem (yet - touch wood!).
There was some talk about MAF sensor failures a while back, on another forum. I was concerned that mine might need cleaning, so at service time I asked the indie garage I use if they could clean it, and he said they do so as standard anyway. So my MAF sensor gets cleaned every 9k miles or roughly every 6 months. Whether this is prolonging its life I dont know.
;o)

yes, there's nothing wrong with doing this as long as you get the right size cone, it worked well on my bmw 318tds and i never had any problems with the maf as no oil gets sucked out of the filter anyway! ive been using them for years, just keep it clean and enjoy that great sound.

its a idi td not a tdi or pd so as far as i`m aware i dont have a maf sensor or am i mistaken??

This is a good point, as I didn't initially realise how old this car was, however I've never come across a diesel car which didn't have some form of MAF sensor, that said, it may be the old mechanical flap type sensor, in which case the cone filter could cause no harm to this.

Maf sensors of any sort only started to appear on diesels in the 90's,mainly to comply with St.II emissions.

I have heard of K&N's on Mondeo TDCi's with good results though the MAF point is a potential issue.

I have a Pipercross cone filter on my Vauxhall Zafira, I removed the standard box and installed the cone filter, now I have read the intake on the standard air box is reduced to restrict air flow etc, however, fitting the cone does make a wonderful sound and has increased fuel economy according to the on board computer, now having said all of that, the air being sucked into the air filter must be cold, more cold air molecules on the surface of the piston etc, so you will probably need an air intake tube or a Pipercross Viper unit, is it worth £220 approximately? I am thinking of using Purolator air filters, I use the oil and fuel filter and they are good.
