Hi
How do petrol stations work out their final charging price? I usually get caught out by them rounding up to the nearest penny, but last time I went they seemed to do it to the nearest two pence, i.e.
50.58 litres x £0.929 = £46.98882, for which I was charged £47.00.
Is there some logic behind this, or the garage ripping me off?
Thanks

I put a tankfull in every other day and my nearest garage, a supermarket, did this regularly.
When I complained at customer services when I was shopping there they said it was a Head Office issue.
I asked my local trading standards - East Sussex CC - and they said that rounding by up to 2p is allowed but I can't remember why.
They also said they were concerned when any garage does this though as they may be pushing all of their allowances to the limit or above. ESCC even explained that some garages have software in the till that detects if an exact "quantity" of fuel is dispensed and ensures the price is right as that it what trading standards often deliver in to the test recepticles. So ESCC were having different size ones made.
About a week after calling to enquire, I noticed all the pumps at the petrol station were closed as they were being serviced. Co-incidence?
