thinking of buying a 1.9 di-d how reliable are they.

Have you looked in Car By Car Breakdown (link on the left of this page), should be in there. Reliable and cheap to run car so I'm told, but very bland and low market resale.
|
Probably the most inappropriate model name for a car in the history of the species...:-)
Unless of course someone knows better.

Originally it was supposed to be named Lancer. As in you were supposed to think that the Lancer Evo was the evolution of what we now know as Carisma. However there was already a combi car called Lancer in Australia and so they called it Carisma.
I like it though. Very easy to drive, well equipped, well behaved, ultra reliable mid size hatchback. And after facelift it wasn't nowhere as bland as most of the cars in that price range.

I have three trainees from Middle East on assignment with me for three months and rather than hiring a car the have bought an old Carisma for £1000 between them from a local dealer .
I had a look over it and although it has over 100 k on the clock it has full new MOT and runs as sweet as a nut.Its just your typical reliable old bland Jap motor.
Even after tax and insurance its cheaper than hiring for three months.
The dealer has told them he will buy it back when they leave so anything they get back will be a bonus.

I'm trading in my 53 plate Carisma DID Elegeance after 8 months of ownership. It's a good car, fairly comfy but the downsides are:
Engine performance is unimpressive, it's very lethargic unless you drive it hard.
Fuel economy- I'm averaging around 41MPG on a 50 mile daily commute (over half of that is motorway driving).
Boot- when it rains the water pours in when opening the boot and soaks the rear speakers/parcelshelf & boot. I believe this is a design fault.
Difficult to resell it's not a popular car!
During my 8 months I've done 16,000 miles of trouble free motoring but the time has come for something a bit faster!

Stuartli - wasn't there an old Skoda called the 'Rapid'???
Agree with you on the Carisma name, mind you!

Yes, but the true name was Rapide.

That was the one that Autocar tagged "The poor man's Porsche" because of its handling...:-)

...or even 'quoi'...
Must get an edit key on here.

Rapide, and yes there is a current one called the Superb !!

Likewise.

>>there is a current one called the Superb !!>>
This is based on the Passat - the name echoed a famous Skoda of many years ago.
In actual fact Czech engineers have always been excellent and Skoda, in the past, made some fine cars.
It's fitting that VW has helped to re-establish that reputation.

Just been looking up the original Superb:

Also there was a Rapid model pre-war (your spelling was right in this case!):
www.autogallery.org.ru/3538skrapid901.jpg (quite a looker)
and the Rapid6:

Ah yes the Skoda Rapid.... That was the one that Jalopy magazine called the Rabid!

Rapid 6 a fabulous looker... I had two Estelle Rapids and they were excellent, and no slouches.

how much?

Sit down and take a deep breath.....£4300 (trade in). I've seen trade in prices between £3500-£4500, aparently the trader laughed when he was asked if he'd buy the car. The salesman had to do a lot of haggling to get this much for it, I was sat with him during the phone call!

Also worth a mention, lots of volvo parts on the carisma and the diesel engine is a renault unit (make of that what you will).
|
>>lots of volvo parts on the carisma>>
The reason was that Mitsubishi and Volvo collaborated on the creation of a new Dutch factory (I think it may have been on the old DAF site) - the Volvo proved to be a more rewarding version of the two.

Ah! the old "salesman haggling and begging for a better trade in" trick.....
Why do you think you were allowed to listen in.......
