What a great programme this is, even though it was depressing last night. Left me pondering on what the solution is to all these teenage car crims.

The bit when they found the cannabis farm was fantastic comedy though, especially when he threatened him with the non-existant Police dog.

What surprised me was the light sentences the crims get. No deterrent at all . The police must get pee'd off .

My BIL is a serving officer (in an area which has featured on previous Car Wars programmes) and yes they do get p'd off. Don't blame magistrates, they only act on guidance from legal professionals (who are leaned on heavily by those in power) who set tarriffs for offences. It costs £30,000+ a year to keep someone in prison so keeping them out saves money - sad but true.

You think of the work that gets put in, the danger these idiot "joy-riders" cause, and the risk that the police face. The convicted only get a "community service order" - maybe its more onerous than it sounds but the police must feel its hardly worth it! Isn't there a cheaper way of redress - like weekend detentions, compulsory disciplined service, the stocks?

A spade in the face? Or iron in the back of the head for those that have seen 'Keeping Mum' ;-) If the victim of the crimes had more of a say in the punishment I'd imagine most caught criminals would find their way back to the straight and narrow very quickly.

I found the sentences unbelievably light - a caution for using a crowbar to lever a car door open, smash the ignition switch casing etc.

However I am perplexed by case involving the young man in the BMW.

For those who didn't see the programme, they stopped a man in a stolen BMW worth about £17k. Naturally he had no paperwork and his story was that he bought it for £9,500 cash - but nothing to support that story. He had a knuckleduster and banned 'MACE' type spray in the glovebox. At the station he changed his story and claimed that he had bought it for £2k cash from someone. This change of story impressed the policeman for his honesty!

Now perhaps I have missed something, but it seemed that the onus was on the police to prove he stole it, or knew it was stolen.(Obviously they could get him on no insurance) If I am found driving a stolen car with no paperwork and can't say who I bought it from, surely it is no defence to claim I bought it for cash and didn't know it was stolen? Otherwise how do you ever get a conviction for stealing or possession of stolen goods.

The Justice System (Injustice system?) is driven by the need to avoid building more jails. Hence the need to release criminals early - see non UK citizens fuss - and avoid jailing people. The population in jail is around 74K - 10k non UK nationals. Capacity is around 76k.

If politcians were hellbent on solving crime , they would be "tough on crime ".. but the decision has been taken to build no more new prisons. Therfore fewer prisoners MUST go to jail as occupancy is near 100%. So fewer jail sentences.

Protect the public is not the aim. It's prevent the prisons being overfull and riots.

All the rest follows....Politicians spin...and do nowt. (see N Kinnock on speeding .. words not actions).

In india they hang them upside down from the ceiling in the Police station and hit them with bamboo poles. It costs nothing, takes a day and they learn their lesson. The criminals prefer it as it is all over and done with quickly (no games to play for 9 months), even though they prefer it, they still have learned their lesson and are sorry for what they did.

When they had the threat/use of the birch in the Isle of Man not even the bravest of the Scottish lads fell foul of it...:-)

Well, here we are a year on and they are still using the 'behave or I'll let the dog loose' trick

but if you watched it tonight, it really should answer the question about the wisdom of buying a second hand police car - the pasting that Volvo was taking over the speed bumps whilst chasing the Saab round Stockport, i'm suprised the two coppers could actually walk afterwards !!

The one to go for is the nice Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus Panda car driven by a careful policewoman driver..:-)
