Any recommendations on steering locks? Which one is currently regarded as "the best"?

I will only answer your question once and not all 4 of them! LOL! It is expensive but the one that comes best out of all the tests is the Disclock (spelling?) about £80 and can be seen and bought at Halfords, among other places.

The disklok is great. It is a bit cumbersome but you learn the knack of how to get it on and off if you persist. The half wheel lock which is cheaper I found more of a problem to get on and off. I never leave my car without it on.

I found an online seller doing the small disklok for £70 including delivery and with free bag via searching on froogle.

I bought my last one from them recently.

I have always been a great believer in these as a deterent. Why bother stealing this car when another is easier. I know we are told professionals can get them off in X minutes, but do they ever?
I use an old Eagle Claw that is now nothing like as good as the best, but it operates with a ratchet. This means it does not need a key to put in on, only take if off. Putting it on takes literally 3 seconds.
How many people have a lock but find putting it on a hassle, and therefore do not do it every time?
I would like a better one but if it weights 5 kilos and takes a lot of fitting, it is no good.

The disclock is best but it is huge and heavy, can't easily be stored in the car.

I have had a Stoplock Pro guarding my mk2 Golf GTI for years and its never even been touched, and this is a car that is seriously easy to steal, and fun to joyride in. The regular stoplocks aren't worth the bother as you can defeat them quite easily {Original info on how to defeat them removed - DD}

In a recent review, Classic & Sports Car magazine rated the Bulldog Autoclamp CC100 (£79.95) the best product and the Halfords 4tress (£34.99) as the budget choice. They reviewed seven in total, the others being the Lock Clamp Super (worst), Autolock Original, Stoplock Professional, Stoplock X-Cel, Keep-It Kestrel (best of the rest).

A school pal of mine went to Newcastle Poly. His landlord was a locksmith specialing in baliff car reposessions and my pal did a lot of work for him and learned some 'useful' 'tricks'. My chum reckoned that (it was ten years ago) none of these autolock/crooklock items took longer than a few seconds to remove. I should say that there was not more than a tiny amount of BS involved on his part.

Their favourite cars were the ones that you just had to kick the front bumper & the airbags went off & the door locks undid.

I had a brand new crooklock on my last W123 Merc that was stolen. It struck me in retrospect as just a way of being another £30-40 out of pocket when your car is nicked.

Yup, Discloc but with a caveat; it comes in multiple diameters but even though our 306 Sedan and V70 require the same one, the spokes on the V70 wheel are sufficiently deep as to make the Discloc a tight fit; removing it reveals a bruised and compressed area of steering wheel rim and likewise back face of the spokes that takes an hour or so to "recover".

As written previously it is bulky but developing the knack to install and remove it quickly is easily learned.

As an aside, when transported in the V70 I keep it under the false boot floor because I don't fancy NN kilogrammes of metal whanging their way to the front of the car in a heavy impact.

I remember a test on a TV programme about 5 years ago, where some of them took seconds to remove, especially the ones with plastic ends that they just smashed off. But some took 40 seconds or more, which could put off the scumbag so they go looking for easier pickings. You cant make your car un-nickable but you can try to make it harder to nick than the next one. Presumably a bailiff may persevere longer than a theif?!
And I've just found this online with similar findings: www.autoexpress.co.uk/product_test/46251/steering_...l

I know you can't do it with a Disclok but with some makes it is better to fit them upside-down;it makes them harder to unlock but much harder to use a tool to pull out the entire lock assy.

I've found a Great Dane left in the car works well. So well I can leave the windows fully down, parked in a public car park even on a sunny day.....

Just have to be carefull with the steak when I pack the shopping in the car.

The problem I had with diskloc was that it was still possible
to steer the car with the lock fitted...!

What makes me laugh,is many of these so called locks are actualy fitted to older cars, normally you would expect these to be fitted on newer cars.

frustration in the end,to rubbish people, that tries to steal car gives rise to destruction of vehicle, in many cases of not being able to drive car away.

so I wonder if these are worth spending money on,at the end of the day if the car is not nickable, it seems to these scroats that do so, destroy the car because they cannot drive it.

Am I wrong in thinking this way?,as its fairly common where I used to live
