....... an artic delivering goods to a shop, with the nearside wheels on ramps to help level the vehicle. Is this common practice?

Presumably to allow the tailgate lift to sit flat on the road.

Extremely common. Sometimes known as a dock leveller.

Common? Given that, shouldn't they be called Chav Ramps?
Sorry, I'll get my coat.

I saw something that made me laugh this morning. A bloke on a large moped, one hand on the handlebars, the other "towing" a large suitcase with wheels.

Re: lorry levelling. Only once have I seen a large boxvan (17 tonne type) which had tipping body like on a tipper so that the body could be level for unloading when the vehicle was parked facing downhill. Would be tempting to use it on the level to tip a load of furniture or whatever out!! However I think this design only allowed the front of the body to be raised a metre or so.

No it's not!
A dock leveler is part of a loading bay where a lorry reverses up to a warehouse loading bay and the dock leveler is a metal plate /ramp which enables pallet stucks to drive onto the lorry

Ah, but has anyone seen a truck turntable? Our new branch of Waitrose is to have one so that the locals are not disturbed by the sounds of truck reversing.

Not a truck one, no, but a local building which houses various disabled clinics and day clubs has an underground bay giving direct access to the lifts and has a large turntable for the disabled wheelchair ambulances. Quite efficient, have seen a slightly built middle aged lady driver easily spin her vehicle round so the wheelchair could drive straight off the tail lift and into the building lift.

No, Stockport. We in the North are at last to be blessed with a branch of Waitrose. Must be all the footballers round here.

You may be blessed, but can you afford it?
Visited our local branch of Waitrose once and never been near it since. Quite frankly just too expensive compared to competitors.

Agreed they are more expensive but they are definately of a better quality, that said I don't really use supermarkets all that much.

Hate to think what the price of Waitrose petrol would be...

when I saw the headline, I was expecting you to say something on the lines of
"BMW indicating on a motorway"

Our local Waitrose is literally just round the corner so I pass it virtually every day, normally within 1p a litre of the cheapest round a bout and quite frequently equal to the cheapest!!!

Waitrose have quite a few of them, some are only big enough to fit 30ft trailers, but others are big enough to take 45ft trailers. Not that easy to get on actually as some of the tighter ones (Marlybone high street for one) have sensors all the way round and a set of lights that guide you in, can be a pain if you get it slightly wrong, also quite an odd feeling when it is turning, but saves loads on damaged vehicles and buildings!!!

Have to say I admire the Tesco artic drivers who reverse their wagons across a busy but narrow London main road into a narrow cave between two terrace houses, at the back end of which is the back end of the Tesco round the corner. Sometimes hold the traffic up for a minute or so but I've never seen one get into trouble.
