MOT Test - machika
Does a re-test require the whole test to be done again, or is it just the areas of failure that are tested again?

SFAIK it is failed aspects only; that is why a re-test is cheaper than full test?

There used to be some text on the back of the old failure slips saying that all items had to be retested, not just those that had failed.

I don't know if the requlations have changed since the new system has been brought in.

Broadly:

If car remains at the testing garage for repairs, no re-test required.
If it fails on a variety of small items, and is returned reapired to the garage within 24 hours, then only failed item is retested - no fee.
If it fails on major item, or is not returned within 24 hours, then full retest required, and garage may charge full test fee (although they are not obliged to).

ww.motuk.co.uk gives chapter and verse

Situation has not changed due to computerisation - what used to happen was that re-tests tended to be a skim through, hence no charge. However, the computer now logs the length of the test, and if not the proper length, tester gets pulled up. Hence they do the full test, and have to charge again.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I have just confirmed with the garage (main dealer) that carried out the test that, because I took the car away to get repairs done, then I will be charged the full fee. I only went there to take advantage of a special offer, so I have gained nothing in the end. I just couldn't afford to pay their rates for spares and labour, on a 12 year old car.
