Yeah, I found that out when trying to get past 155, that the fuel supply shuts off, even with the gas pedal all the way down.

A friend's Mercedes C320 had a speed limiter as an additional function of the cruise control; dial in the limit you want and the car wouldn't exceed it without manual override.
On the subject of top speed limits, sometimes, lower limits apply too; my V70 2.4T was limited to 220 kph (approx 137MPH) in standard form, confirmed on an Autobahn near Munich with foot welded to the floor, downhill; all that happened was that the instantaneous fuel consumption improved but speed remained the same.
One of the side affects of the BSR software tuning I now use is that this speed limiter is removed and the car is now able to reach its "natural" top speed. TomTom GPS gave 158MPH on my last run to the Czech Republic but the most impressive and more useful aspect of the tuning is the muscular nature of acceleration deep in to three digit speeds.

Most cars that are physically capable of exceeding 155 mph are limited to that speed by an informal agreement that exists between the manufacturers.
This agreement was suspended in Germany last year.
