Petrol was sold by the gallon at that time. Prices, in pence, were:

1977, 78.20; 1978, 76.50; 1979, 98.25 (after Petroleum Revenue Tax increased from 45 per cent to 60 per cent).

Dividing by 4.5 will give an approximate price for a litre.

I recall it was 35p a gallon in the first year of so of the 1970s as I had started work in a town about 18 miles away and used to buy the petrol from a friend who ran a petrol station.

When I was a kid in the 'sixties my Dad would usually get "ten bob's worth" of petrol. That was 50 pence in today's worthless money.

and that would be about 2 galls or 9 litres :-(

I remember when I worked on the pumps every night after work from six till ten.

Four star was 4 shillings and eleven pence per gallon for ages.

A very surprising number of people asked for 4 gallons gave me a pound and drove off. Four pence tip may not sound much but those days it was.

About 1963 or 64 I think.

Have ticket from fill up for my old '57 Conquest Century MkII.
Is for 16Gallons @ 4/9d p.g. total £3.16.0d. Must have had the reserve tap open as tank held 16.5gallons. Happy Days long since gone. I think rover 75 probably buying 5star.

And you got your full money's worth of lead. The diagonal "end of speed limit" sign meant exactly that. Breathalysers hadn't been thought of, nor had exhaust emissions and you weren't a social pariah just because you smoked Capstan Full Strength in public. I'm just pleased that I am old enough to have experienced the good old days.
