Trade In Values - barneybee
Hi,

I'm thinking of trading in my 2003 (53) Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9 DID. However Parkers says £4.6K & whatcar says £3.1K. What is a realistic trade in price?

In my experience Parkers over-values. I believe there is one on the AA that corresponds quite well (in private sales terms) to those you see in autotrader - surely the best guide if ever there was one?

Oldman - did you do that valuation with or without the aid of Glass's online?

If not, you're bang on their valuation without it.

I'd be amazed if you actually got more than £3000 for it - they're not popular cars in the trade and it would probably go straight to auction and fetch rock bottom.

Quite possibly - I can't imagine anyone being filled with joy at the prospect of having to flog a Carisma on.

There's a dealer trying to do so on the Trader at £8k though (and not a Mitsubishi franchise either).

Another at £6,600 and another at £5,699.

So yeah, I can see where Glass's £4k figure comes from but realistically, it all depends on how much the salesman likes the prospect of taking one of these in as to how much he offers because it's unlikely to be turned around and back on the forecourt.

Its also a matter of what you are trading in against.

i.e. the popularity/rarity/price of the newer car.

Looking through recent auction sales a 2002/02 1.9 DI-D with 26,000 on the clock sold for £3,300. That gives a rough idea of the true auction value.

A dealer wouldn't pay more than £3000 true price trade in(excluding over allowance) for such a car - most probably nearer £2500 unless they can get it under written.

Spot on pd. £3k is a good deal before the dealer starts eating into the margin of the new car.
