Just thought I'd share a bit of good fortune with you people.
Last week, took the car up the major route 450kms or so, and back the next day.
Noticed on the way back a bit of a growl from the back box, and it has got progressively worse this apst week.
This morning, sounded like a tractor, so, with the long weekend approaching, took it into my local silencer fitters.
yep - BIG hole in the top, unfixable.
So they quote me R330* for a new one (was R290 in Nov 2004, with 1-yr guarantee).
Off you go, say I, biting the bullet a touch...
Next thing, they wander over, sorry, have NO mild steel ones in stock (Though the 'puter says they do!) and would I accept a stainless one for a mere R50 more?
Excuse me while I bite your hand off!
So I've now got a stainless back box with a FIVE year guarantee (normal prioce over R600), they checked out the rest of the system for me, and proclaimed it in good whack...
Happy motoeing, until the next thing goes wrong!
(one pound = R10.50. BUT beer costs R10 a bottle, and fags are R15 a pack. All relative.)

The prices you quote just amaze me at how low they are. Makes me wonder why we pay so much.

Again, tis all relative to earnings, but let me make a little automotive and grocery comparison here ...
Petrol - R5.60 a litre.
Bread - R4 a loaf
Milk - R8 for two litres
Steak - R45 a kilo
Tyres - paid R355 each for 185/65/14s last week.
Dampers - rear armstrongs, R430 the pair fitted.
Oil and filters and plug change - about R300.
Insurance - presently about R300/month fully comp, which also covers household goods to a value of R150K. (labour is cheap for panelbeating, spraying etc etc)
Cars themselves aren't cheap, but last much longer - see bove, we fix, don't scrap!)
Speeding fines? Gotta catch me first! (Last one was R500 for going 86km/h in a 60 zone.)
Penalty points? What they?

What are average earnings? And income and other taxes? The real cost of something is number of hours or minutes you need to work to buy it. Purchasing power parity is the only way to compare costs between countries.

IIRC the cost of a can of oil in a major supermarket like Pick N Pay was incredibly cheap.

See mrmender's thread the other day about getting his Land Cruiser fixed in Port Sudan... there's a barely credible moral here to anyone who's ever tried it:
